Tigers Losing Streak to Cleveland Reaches 19 Games – Sunday Sports Wrap

MLB

Another game against Cleveland . Another loss to Cleveland . The Detroit Tigers dropped their 19th consecutive contest to the Indians Saturday, 3-1. Spencer Turnbull gave up all three Cleveland runs before leaving in the fifth inning. Detroit avoided the shutout when Willi Castro scored on JaCoby Jones’ two-out double in the bottom of the ninth. With the tying runs on second and third, Cameron Maybin grounded out to end the game.

That set wraps up in Detroit this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Adam Plutko. Coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tigers’ first baseman C.J. Cron will miss the rest of the season. Cron will undergo surgery to repair a ligament he tore in his knee during last Monday’s game. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Saturday that Jeimer Candelario will take over at first base.

Starting pitcher Ivan Nova has also been placed on the disabled list. He’s suffering from triceps tendinitis. With Tyler Alexander expected to follow Fulmer in relief in today’s contest, that leave two holes in Detroit’s starting rotation. There’s no word as to who will fill them. For now, reliever Anthony Castro has been called up from Toledo.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning, then held on to edge the Chicago Cubs 6-5 Saturday. The Cubs took an early lead with three quick runs off Randy Houser, who settled down, and completed five innings. Three runs by the Crew tied it in the fourth. Milwaukee added one in the sixth to take the lead, but Seven Souza, Jr.’s homer off Corey Knebel in the bottom of the eighth forced extra innings.

Those teams conclude their series in Chicago this afternoon. Josh Lindblom will face Jon Lester.

Logan Morrison is no longer a Milwaukee Brewer. Morrison was designated for assignment last Monday. No team claimed him on waivers, and he has chosen to become a free agent.

Today’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates has been called off, as Cincinnati continues investigation of a positive COVID-19 test result from late last week.

The Saint Louis Cardinals returned to the field Saturday, after more than two weeks off because of positive COVID-19 tests. They won both ends of a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox, 5-1 and 6-3.
