MLB

Parker Meadows led off the game with a home run, and the Tigers cruised past the Rays 7-1 last night. Meadows wound up with three hits. Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run homer. Six Tigers pitchers held Tampa Bay to a run on seven hits. Jackson Jobe turned in a perfect ninth inning in his major league debut.

The Tigers host the Rays again this afternoon. Reese Olson will pitch against former Tiger Tyler Alexander. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Royals and Twins also won, so Kansas City and Detroit remain tied for the second and third American League wild card playoff slots. Minnesota remains two games out. Each team has four games remaining. Any combination of three Tigers wins or Twins losses puts Detroit in the playoffs. The Orioles have clinched the top American League wild card berth.

The Brewers fell 2-1 to the Pirates last evening. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth and gave up just two hits. One was a two-run double by Liover Peguero. Jake Bauers’ solo home run provided Milwaukee’s only score.

The Brewers conclude that series in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Aaron Civale will pitch against Mitch Keller.

NHL

The Red Wings opened their preseason schedule with a 4-2 victory over the Blackhawks last night. Tyler Motte, Jeff Petry, Lucas Raymond and Olli Maatta scored for Detroit. Ville Husso allowed both Chicago scores over two periods of play. Sebastian Cossa played one scoreless period in net.
