Tigers Hold off Rangers – Monday Sports Wrap

The Tigers opened up a 9-0 lead over the first six innings, then held on to take a 9-8 victory over the Rangers yesterday. Detroit’s early outburst was powered by two Kerry Carpenter doubles, a double and a home run by Jeimer Candelario, and a bases-loaded double by Harold Castro, who drove in five runs. Drew Hutchison left as Texas scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. The Rangers then added three runs off Alex Lange in the eighth, and scored three more off Gregory Soto in the bottom of the ninth. Joe Jiménez bailed out Soto, and recorded the final two outs.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Mariners tomorrow. Matt Manning will start against George Kirby. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers outslugged the Cubs 9-7 yesterday. Eric Lauer gave up four runs over six innings, and earned the win. Christian Yelich and Kolten Wong homered.

The Brewers host the Pirates tonight. Corbin Burnes will start for Milwaukee.

NFL

The Lions wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 16-9 loss at Pittsburgh yesterday. Tim Boyle started at quarterback, but completed just five of 15 passes, with one interception before giving way to David Blough. Blough completed 17 of 32 tosses for 160 yards and a late touchdown. Austin Siebert kicked a 36-yard field goal.

The final cuts are beginning, in anticipation of the opening of the regular season. The Packers released linebacker Ty Summers yesterday. The NFL will take Labor Day weekend off. The Packers open their campaign Sunday, September 11th, at Minnesota. The Lions begin their season that same day at home against the Eagles.
