MLB – Tigers Outlast Rain, Cubs
The Detroit Tigers broke open a tie game with three runs in the eighth inning, and held off the Chicago Cubs 10-8 last night. Detroit opened up a quick lead, scoring five runs in the first two innings on homers by Ian Kinsler, J.D. Martinez, and Anthony Gose. Anibal Sanchez gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, then left in the third after a thunderstorm delay. The Cubs came back when Buck Farmer surrendered a three-run homer in the fifth. Detroit surged ahead with three runs in the eighth – two driven in by Nick Castellanos’ bases-loaded single. They added an insurance run in the ninth, then held their breath while Chicago scored twice without a hit off Bruce Rondon in the bottom of the ninth.

The Tigers wrap up that series against the Cubs in Chicago tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Jon Lester. Hear the first pitch at 8:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Catcher Bryan Holaday got some good news yesterday. The thumb he thought was broken after a collision at the plate during a Toledo Mud Hens game Sunday night is just dislocated. He could return before the end of the season. Meanwhile, pitcher Shane Greene has been sidelined at Toledo because of numbness in the fingers of his right hand.

Former Tigers’ president and general manager Dave Dombrowski has been hired as president of baseball operations for the Boston Red Sox. The move reunites Dombrowski with team owner John Henry, who owned the Marlins when Dombrowski was general manager there. His first job will be to find a general manager for the Sox. Current GM Ben Cherington has opted to leave the team.

Cravy
Cravy

Tyler Cravy had another rough outing, as the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Miami Marlins 9-6 last night. Cravy gave up seven runs before leaving with two outs in the third inning. Milwaukee made some noise with four runs in the fourth, but couldn’t climb out of the hole.

The Brewers conclude that series against the Marlins this afternoon. Wily Peralta will pitch against Tom Koehler.
