MLB

The Tigers dropped a close 3-2 decision to the Guardians last night. Cleveland scored all their runs in the first two innings off Drew Hutchison, who settled down a completed five frames. Both Detroit runs came in the fourth, on a single by Harold Castro, and a double by Eric Haase. Newly-promoted minor league slugger Kerry Carpenter went hitless in his major league debut.

The Tigers entertain the Guardians again this afternoon. Garrett Hill will start against Zach Plesac. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before the game, Tigers’ owner Chris Ilitch fired team general manager Al Avila. Avila had been placed in charge of Detroit’s rebuild seven years ago. Ilitch acknowledged that the promise the team had showed last season had fizzled out badly this year. Assistant GM Sam Menzin will handle operations for now, but, at age 32, he’s not considered a candidate to take the job permanently.

The Brewers pulled out a dramatic 4-3 win over the Rays yesterday. Rowdy Tellez tied the game with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. Willy Adames singled home Tyrone Taylor with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Brandon Woodruff gave up three runs over seven innings. Devin Williams pitched a scoreless 10th to earn the win.

The Brewers have today off, and visit the Cardinals tomorrow night. Eric Lauer will pitch against Jordan Montgomery.
