The Detroit Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Minnesota Twins 8-5 last night. The Tigers scored twice in the third on a Dawel Lugo home run, and twice more in the fourth on a single by Victor Reyes. Starter Edwin Jackson gave up a solo home run in the first inning, then turned in three shutout frames before being torched for five runs in the fifth. Reyes picked up Detroit’s final RBI with single in the sixth. Jake Cave’s homer off Matt Hall provided Minnesota’s final two runs.
The Tigers conclude that series in Minnesota this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Martín Pérez. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The man whom many consider to be the Tigers’ shortstop of the future made his debut in last night’s game. Willi Castro was called up from Toledo after Niko Goodrum was placed on the injured list with a groin strain.
The Tigers also activated catcher Grayson Greiner off the disabled list, where he’d been recovering from a bad back. Hr was optioned to Toledo, but is expected to be brought back up when rosters expand September 1st.
Chase Anderson and four Milwaukee Brewers relievers combined to shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0 last night. Anderson gave up three hits over five frames. Junior Guerra, Matt Albers, Alex Claudio and Jay Jackson completed the effort, with Claudio surrendering the only hit. Eric Thames and Trent Grisham homered.
The Brewers will host the Diamondbacks again tonight. Zach Davies will start against Robbie Ray.
NFL
The Detroit Lions got some good medical news yesterday. Linebacker Jarrad Davis and center Frank Ragnow both left Friday night’s exhibition loss to the Buffalo Bills early with leg injuries. Ragnow’s turned out to be a minor ankle sprain. Davis’ injury hasn’t been defined, but coach Matt Patricia told reporters that it’s not serious enough to consider placing him on injured reserve.
