MLB – Tigers Lose Marathon
The Detroit Tigers fell to the Kansas City Royals 2-1 last night. Shane Greene pitched eight strong innings, giving up just one run in the second. Detroit tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Ian Kinsler. After an 1:43 rain delay, the Tigers made a bid to win the game in the bottom of the ninth… loading the bases with two outs. James McCann ended the threat by flying out to center field. The Royals took the lead in the top of the 10th after reliever Angel Nesbitt hit Alex Gordon with a pitch. Gordon advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by former Tiger Omar Infante. The Tigers again loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but Anthony Romine was thrown out at the plate as part of a double play, and Yoenis Cespedes struck out to end the game.

The loss drops Detroit a game-and-a-half behind Kansas City in the American League Central Division.

The Tigers have today off, and open a three-game home set against the Twins tomorrow night. Alfredo Simon will start against Kyle Gibson. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The off-day will allow David Price to get a couple of extra days of rest before his next start. Price suffered a mild hamstring strain during Friday night’s game. He was set to start on Thursday, but will be dropped back to Saturday. Meanwhile, Justin Verlander threw some pitches off flat ground to manager Brad Ausmus yesterday. If his aching triceps muscle feels alright, he’ll do some more throwing tomorrow. There’s still no timetable for his eventual return to the starting rotation.

Martin Maldonado singled in the winning run in the 11th inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago Cubs 3-2 yesterday. Maldonado and Elian Herrera hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to provide Milwaukee’s other runs. Matt Garza pitched well, giving up a run on just three hits over seven innings.

The Brewers open an interleague series against the White Sox in Milwaukee tonight. Wily Peralta will pitch against Jeff Samardzija.
