High School

In softball yesterday…
• Calumet swept Gogebic 9-1 and 13-1. In the opener, Audrey Erkkila got the complete game win, with five strikeouts and no walks. Lena Mhyren hit a grand slam. Helen Beiring and Brooke Pomroy each had three hits. The nightcap ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. Mhyren got the win in the circle, with five strikeouts and only one walk. Ryleigh Johnson led the offense with three hits, including a three-run home run. Myhren, Beiring, Pomroy and Laina Kariniemi each had two hits.

MLB

The Tigers lost 7-4 to the Orioles last night. Baltimore put the game away with five runs in the seventh inning off Chasen Shreve. Eric Haase had two hits and drove in two runs for Detroit.

The Tigers host the Orioles again tonight. Eduardo Rodriguez will pitch against Grayson Rodriguez. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter left last night’s game after hitting the wall while making a catch that robbed Ryan Mountcastle of a home run. Team officials say Carpenter injured his shoulder while throwing the ball back to the infield. He’ll be evaluated today.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and welcome the Angels this evening. Wade Miley will start against Tyler Anderson. 

NFL

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was selected by the Carolina Panthers as the first pick in the NFL Draft last night. The Texans took Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second pick, then traded up to grab Alabama pass rusher Will Anderson, Jr., with the third. The Colts used the fourth pick on Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson. Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon went to the Seahawks with the fifth pick.

The Lions had the sixth pick, but traded it and their third-round pick to the Cardinals in exchange for Arizona’s picks in the first, second and fifth rounds. They used the Arizona first-round pick at number 12 to take Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who had been projected to go much lower in the draft. They then used their own 18th pick to take Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell, a former Butkus Award winner.

The Packers used the 13th pick to take Iowa defensive end Lukas Van Ness.

Rounds two and three will take place tonight, and the final four rounds will be held tomorrow.
