MLB – Tigers
Alex Rodriguez homered on the first pitch he saw from Justin Verlander for his 3,000th career hit, and the New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-2 last night. Verlander also surrendered home runs to Didi Gregorius and Brett Gardner. He was charged with six runs before leaving in the seventh inning, and took the loss. as No make-up date has been announced.
The Tigers continue that series against the Yankees in New York tonight. Alfredo Simon will pitch against Nathan Eovaldi. Hear the first pitch at 7:15 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez homered in the first inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-5. Taylor Jungmann earned the win, giving up four runs over six innings.
The Brewers continue that series at Colorado this afternoon. Kyle Lohse will start against Chad Bettis.
Makela to Play at Finlandia
Jeffers High School standout Haley Makela is joining the Finlandia University women’s basketball team. Makela is a two-time All-Copper Country Conference first-teamer, and led the Jets to their first conference title since 1998. She was named conference MVP this past season, averaging 13 points and 12 rebounds per game. She also graduated with a 4.0 grade point average.
U.P. All Star Classic Today
The 30th annual U.P. All–Star Classic will take place at today Marquette High School. The girls will tip off at noon, and the boys at 2:00. Skills competition will be at 10:30 this morning.
The girls’ North All-Star Team includes Lexi Rowe and Allen Twardzik from the state-champion Calumet Copper Kings. Kings’ coach Jeff Twardzik will coach the North squad. Houghton’s Sydney Dillinger, Jeffers’ Haley Makela, and Molly Niemi of Ewen-Trout Creek are also on the team.
The boys’ North All-Star Team featured Brett Poissant and Tyler Roose from Lake Linden-Hubbell, along with Houghton’s Nate Gockenbach. Lakes’ coach Jack Kumupla will coach the team.
