MLB
The Detroit Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost to the Cleveland Indians 8-3 last night. Detroit scored twice in the third inning, on RBI doubles by Nicholas Castellanos and Niko Goodrum. Mike Fiers pitched four shutout innings, but gave up two runs in the fifth to tie the game, and allowed the Indians to take the lead with another in the sixth. A Victor Martinez home run in the bottom of the sixth re-tied the game, but it was all Cleveland after that. The Indians scored four runs of Joe Jiménez and Daniel Stumpf in the eighth, and added another off Victor Alcántara in the ninth.
The Tigers entertain the Cleveland Indians again this afternoon. Blaine Hardy will start against Mike Clevinger. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Hardy is pitching today instead of Francisco Liriano, who was scratched after suffering an allergic reaction.
Chase Anderson turned in six strong innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the San Francisco Giants 3-1 last night. Anderson gave up a run on four hits. Newly-acquired Joakim Soria, Jeremy Jeffress and Corey Knebel each threw a scoreless inning in relief, although Jeffress loaded the bases in the eighth before working out of the jam. Ryan Braun drove in two runs for Milwaukee.
The Brewers will play the Giants in San Francisco again this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Andrew Suárez.
Milwaukee added a big bat to their lineup yesterday by obtaining third baseman Mike Moustakas from the Kansas City Royals. In exchange, K-C gets outfield prospect Brett Phillips and reliever Jorge López. Incumbent Brewers third baseman Travis Shaw is expected to move to second base. Moustakas is hitting just .249 this season, but has 20 home runs, and his power stroke should be well suited to Miller Park.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons have now signed both of the players obtained in this year’s draft. Former Creighton guard Khyri Thomas inked his rookie contract this week. He was drafted in the second round by the Philadelphia 76ers, and immediately traded to the Pistons for a pair of future second-round picks. Detroit’s other draftee, Bruce Brown, signed his contract earlier this month.
High School
The Lake Linden-Hubbell varsity volleyball team will hold a car wash and bake sale today between noon and 4:00 in the high school parking lot. They’ll also be accepting returnable cans and bottles.
