High School
At the Upper Peninsula track and field regionals Friday…
– The Houghton boys took the team title, and the Gremlin girls finished second at Westwood. Full results were not provided.
– At the Division Two meet at Ishpeming, the Hancock and L’Anse boys finished sixth and seventh out of the seven teams competing. Hancock placed second, and L’Anse sixth, out of six teams competing in the girls meet. The Bulldog boys 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams finished second, and Jake Lang placed second in the pole vault. For L’Anse, Caleb Scroggs and Ryan Delene finished third and fourth in the shot put. For the Hancock girls, Ellie Sturos won the 1600 meter run. Makenna Nuttall took the 3200 meter run. The 4×100 meter relay team placed second., as did the 4×800 meter relay team. Ally Fenton took the pole vault. L’Anse’s Taylor Brown won the high jump. Full results are here.
– At the Division Three meet at Wakefield, the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls took an easy team victory. Chassell was second, and Ontonagon third. The Lakes boys finished a distant second to Bessemer. Chassell placed third. Full results were not provided.
In high school baseball Friday…
– Hancock swept a doubleheader from Jeffers, 9-0 and 6-5.
– Houghton lost a pair of close games to the Gogebic Miners, 10-7 and 9-8.
In softball…
– Calumet and L’Anse split a doubleheader. The Copper Kings won the first game 7-3, while the Purple Hornets too the nightcap 7-5.
– Houghton swept Jeffers, 17-1 and 14-12.
In golf, Calumet took the team title at the Lake Linden meet at the Calumet course. Houghton and Ontonagon tied for second. Ben Strong of the Gremlins medaled with a 76.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Texas Rangers 5-3 Friday night. Daniel Norris gave up a pair of home runs, and took the loss.
The Tigers host the Rangers again this evening. Justin Verlander will start against A.J. Griffin. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:50 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Buck Farmer’s latest stint with the Tigers lasted only one day. Called up to provide some insurance for a tired bullpen, he was returned to Toledo after last night’s game. Catcher John Hicks was brought up to fill the vacancy created by Victor Martinez’ paternity leave. Miguel Cabrera is expected to be back in the lineup today, after missing three games with a strained oblique.
The Milwaukee Brewers earned their fourth straight win last night with a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Domingo Santana and Jett Bandy each drove in two runs. Paolo Espino gave up three runs over four innings in his first major league start. Wily Peralta struck out five over two scoreless innings to get the win in relief.
The Brewers continue that series in Chicago this afternoon. Chase Anderson will pitch against Jake Arrieta.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, The Penguins edged the Senators 3-2, to tie the Eastern Conference final at two wins per team. That series continues in Pittsburgh tomorrow.
The Western Conference final is tied 2-2, and continues tonight as the Ducks host the Predators.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Cavaliers ripped the Celtics 130-86. Cleveland leads the Eastern Conference final 2-0.
The Western Conference final continues tonight, as the Spurs host the Warriors. Golden State leads that series 2-0.
