The Detroit Tigers edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1 last night, in a game that was cut short in the seventh inning by rain. Mike Pelfrey earned the win. He gave up eight hits before leaving in the sixth inning, but just one run. Both of Detroit’s runs came in the fifth inning, on solo home runs by Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler.
The Tigers continue that series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Michael Fulmer will pitch against former Tiger Jacob Turner. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Tigers’ starter Jordan Zimmermann threw a two-inning bullpen session yesterday. If he doesn’t experience any problems with his strained neck muscle, he could make his first rehab start Sunday for the Toledo Mud Hens. Starter Daniel Norris is expected to make his second rehab start for the Hens on Saturday. He’s rehabbing a strained oblique muscle.
Francisco Liriano struck out 13, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 last night. Matt Garza gave up all five of Pittsburgh’s runs over five innings of work, including three in the first inning. Jonathan Villar homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers host the Cubs tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Jason Hammel.
Twilight League
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– Dean Kangas-State Farm took two games from Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn, 7-0 and 2-1.
– Wolverine-Orbit out-slugged the Copper Country Miners 20-14. Luke Paul and Mike Saari homered for Wolverine, and Lucas Lanhala had four hits.
Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball
The Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League tournament champion will be crowned tonight. Mattila Rock and Dock will face Superior National Bank at 7:00 at the Chassell field for the Holly McCullah Memorial Trophy.
Little League
Both the Portage Lake Major and Minor Little League baseball teams will compete for state titles this weekend. The Minors open play at Midland today. The Majors begin competition at Tecumseh tomorrow.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed right wing Mitch Callahan to a one-year contract. Callahan has been a stalwart for the Grand Rapids Griffins for the past five seasons, but has appeared in only one game with Detroit.
MTU
North Central high school basketball standout Dawson Bilski will play college ball at Michigan Tech beginning in the fall of 2017. Bilski averaged 15 points per game for the Jets as a junior last season, as they won their second straight Class D state championship.
