Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last night…
• McGann’s/Northern Auto downed Koppers 26-12. The result of Koppers’ game against Sayen’s Auto/Coca Cola was not reported.
• A&S Industrial/Loukus Tech edged Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics 14-13, and then defeated Amy J’s 18-9.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League play last evening…
• Crush pounded Tervo Agency 15-0. Emily Jokela threw a one-hitter, and struck out 13. She also hit two singles, a double and an inside-the-park home run.
• JB’s defeated REL 4-1. Sadie Biekkola took the win for JB’s, and had a double. Kenzie LePage had a double and a single.
• Superior National Bank edged Superior Service 1-0. Sylvia Aho singled home Rachel Huotari with the game’s only run in the seventh inning. Rosalie Kangas was the winning pitcher. Josie Connors had a double and a single for Superior Service.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight baseball league action tonight…
• REL-Mohawk Technology plays Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker at the Driving Park.
• Houghton Building Supply-Stanton meets Garnet Garage at the Houghton Field.

College Football

Former University of Michigan football coach Gary Moeller has died.

Moeller succeeded Bo Shembechler in 1990, and won 44 games over five seasons, including four of five bowl appearances. He also coached the Detroit Lions for seven games during the 2000 season, after Bobby Ross resigned.

Gary Moeller was 81 years old. No cause of death was announced.

MLB

The Tigers lost both ends of their doubleheader against the Royals yesterday.

In the afternoon game, Detroit collected just four hits in a 3-1 loss. Michael Pineda pitched into the sixth, and gave up all three K.C. runs.

Spot starter Alex Faedo was hit hard in the nightcap, giving up four runs before giving way to Tyler Alexander in the second inning. The Royals went on to a 7-3 victory.

After the game, Detroit sent Faedo back to Toledo. They also sent Kody Clemens down to the Mudhens. Akil Badoo will be called up to replace him.

The Tigers visit the Royals again tonight. Beau Brieske will start against Kris Bubic. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a short series at Minnesota tonight. Jason Alexander will start against Josh Winder.

Horseshoes

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
• Dreamland One cruised past 41 Lumber 8-1.
• Calumet One dispatched Bucko’s Party Store 8-1.
• Rocky’s Bar edged Calumet Electronics 5-4.
• Dreamland Two defeated Ahmeek Fire Department 6-3.
• L and L blanked Drift Inn 9-0.
• Loading Zone v Harter’s Party Store – postponed.

Golf

The annual Baraga Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble will be held Saturday at the L’Anse Golf Club. Registration opens at 10:00, with a shotgun start at 11:00.
