Tigers Drop Two – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers Fall Twice
Jeff Samardzija fired a one-hitter, as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Detroit Tigers 2-0 in the first game of yesterday’s day-night doubleheader. Victor Martinez was the only Tiger to get on base, when he hit a bloop single to open the fifth inning. Detroit starter Kyle Ryan took the hard-luck loss, giving up both Chicago runs while pitching into the seventh inning. Game details are here.

In last night’s game, the White Sox scored three early runs off Randy Wolf, then held off the Tigers for a 3-2 victory. Alex Avila homered for Detroit. Game details are here.

The Tigers host the Chicago White Sox again tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Jose Quintana. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago Cubs 9-5 last night. Wily Peralta gave up six runs before leaving in the fifth inning. Game details are here.

The Brewers continue that set against the Cubs in Chicago this evening. Tyler Cravy will start for Milwaukee. He’s filling in for Jimmy Nelson, who was struck on the head by a line drive in his last start. Jake Arrieta will pitch for the Cubs.

The Brewers confirmed yesterday that they have hired David Stearns as their new general manager. Stearns has received positive reviews for helping to rebuild the Houston Astros as their assistant GM.

High School
In the high school cross country meet at Calumet yesterday, the Houghton boys and Calumet girls took first place. Additional results were not reported.

– Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Calumet.
– Hancock entertains West Iron County.
– L’Anse, and Dollar Bay play a triangular at Houghton.

In last night’s NFL game, the Jets defeated the Colts 20-7. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have picked at least 10 games correctly to be eligible to be this week’s winner.

Matthew Stafford took part in yesterday’s Detroit Lions’ walkthrough practice yesterday. He said he felt better after taking a number of hits to the chest during Sunday’s loss.
