MLB
The Detroit Tigers blew a late lead, and lost to the Texas Rangers 8-3 yesterday. Justin Verlander turned in his best start of the season, throwing seven shutout innings. He gave up just three hits, and struck out nine. Detroit was up 2-0 when the bullpen took over in the eighth. Texas scored seven runs off Justin Wilson and Mark Lowe. The big blow was a grand slam by catcher Bobby Wilson, who had been traded to the Rangers by the Tigers just five days earlier.

The Tigers have lost six in a row, and open an interleague set at Washington tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Stephen Strasburg. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Verlander’s nine strikeouts moved him past Jack Morris into second place on the all-time Tigers’ list. Mickey Lolich is Detroit’s career strikeout leader, and Verlander still trails him by 900.

After the game, the Tigers recalled outfielder Tyler Collins from Toledo, and sent reliever Buck Farmer down.

Jonathan Lucroy’s homer in the eighth inning powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Lucroy’s solo shot completed a comeback for the Brewers, who trailed the Reds 4-1 after four innings. Starter Junior Guerra gave up all four Cincy runs over six innings. Ryan Braun and Hernan Perez also homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers begin a series at Miami tonight. Wily Peralta will return from paternity leave to start for Milwaukee. Jose Fernandez counter for the Marlins.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Cavaliers edged the Hawks 100-99 to complete a sweep of that second-round series. The Thunder defeated the Spurs 111-97. That set is tied at two wins per team.
