Tigers Drop Ninth Straight – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

The Jeffers baseball team’s season ended with a 7-4 loss to Rudyard in the state quarterfinals Saturday. The Jets won a regional championship earlier in the day, blanking East Jordan 2-0. The Jets conclude their campaign with a record of 24-2.

The Hancock softball team advanced to the state quarterfinals with an 18-3 rout of Norway Saturday in their regional championship game. The Bulldogs eliminated Ishpeming 4-3 in the regional semifinal Saturday morning. Hancock will face Johannesburg-Lewiston in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 5:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. Tickets for the game must be purchased in advance online here.

NBA

The Nuggets will host the Heat in game five of the NBA championship series tonight. Denver leads the series 3-1.

NHL

The Golden Knights host the Panthers in game five of the Stanley Cup championship series tomorrow. Vegas leads the series 3-1.

MLB

The Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead yesterday, and lost to the Diamondbacks 7-5. Detroit built a 5-2 advantage over the first four innings, with help from a Zach McInstry home run. That held until Alex Lange surrendered a run in the eighth, and Jason Foley was torched for four runs in the top of the ninth.

The Tigers have dropped nine straight, and host the Braves tonight. Tyler Holton is expected to start against Charlie Morton. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell to the Athletics 8-6 yesterday. Christian Yelich homered. Freddy Peralta gave up four runs over five innings, and took the loss.

The Brewers have today off, and visit the Twins tomorrow. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Pablo López.

Running

Registration continues for Friday’s annual Thatcher Markham Memorial run. The 5K will begin at 7:00 at the intersection of Quincy and Scott Streets in Hancock, just ahead of the Bridgefest Parade. The race is run in memory of Thatcher Markham, who lost his life in the 2018 Father’s Day Flood. Money raised will benefit the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association and the Pigs ‘N Heat Fund.
