The Detroit Tigers’ bats remained quiet last night, in a 3-1 loss to the Washington Nationals. Daniel Norris took the tough loss, giving up two runs over five innings. The Tigers’ only score came on a home run by Nicholas Castellanos. Detroit has now lost eight games in a row, and has scored just three runs in its last three contests.
The Tigers continue that interleague series against the Nationals this afternoon. Gregory Soto will be brought up from Toledo to start against Austin Voth. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers have placed Spencer Turnbull on the injured list with shoulder fatigue. Turnbull was pulled from Thursday night’s start after two innings. An MRI revealed no structural damage.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 last night. The Crew scored twice in the first inning, on a wild pitch and an RBI double by Eric Thames. Jhoulys Chacín gave up a run over five innings. The Bucs tied the game with a run off Junior Guerra in the eighth, and scored the game-winner against Jeremy Jeffress in the ninth.
The Brewers will entertain the Pirates again this evening. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Jordan Lyles.
American Legion Baseball
The Copper Country Flames will play a doubleheader at Negaunee tomorrow.
High School
The annual U.P. High School Football All-Star Game will be played today at 1:00 at the Superior Dome. This year’s teams are not divided geographically, but are simply designated “Red” and “Black.” Local members of the Red squad include Trevor Hendrickson, Brent Loukus, and Matt and Travis Ojala from Calumet… and Kellen Klein from Lake Linden-Hubbell. The Black team roster includes Josh VanDenburg from Calumet… Reese Waara from L’Anse… and Eddy Polakowski and Philip Voss from Ontonagon.
