Tigers Draft More Hitters – Friday Sports Wrap

Finlandia

The Finlandia University baseball team has added two more players. Skylar Abell is a pitcher from Rock Falls, Illinois. Dominic Duprie is an outfielder from Ecorse, Michigan.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers continued their focus on hitters as the Major League Baseball amateur draft concluded last night. In the second round, they took Ohio State University catcher Dillon Dingler and Louisiana State University outfielder Danny Cabrera. They picked Rice University shortstop Trei Cruz in the third round, Arizona State University third baseman Gage Workman in the fourth, and third baseman Colt Keith from Biloxi High School in Mississippi in the fifth round. Cabrera is not related to Miguel Cabrera. Cruz is related to two former major-leaguers – his grandfather, José Cruz, and his father, José Cruz, Jr. Workman was a teammate of first-round pick Spencer Torkelson at ASU, and some thought he also merited a first-round call.

The Milwaukee Brewers filled out their draft card with University of Miami shortstop Freddy Zamora in the second round, Central Michigan University catcher Zavier Warren in the third, University of Cincinnati outfielder Joey Weimer in the fourth, and University of Louisiana at Lafayette shortstop Hayden Cantrelle in the fifth.

NHL

The NHL teams that will conclude the 2019-2020 season can open their full training camps July 10th. The decision by the league and the player’s association is contingent on safety issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited workouts began this week. The date for the resumption of the season has not been set. The Detroit Red Wings are not among the field of 24 teams that will compete for the Stanley Cup.
