Tigers Comeback Falls Short – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

On the baseball schedule today, weather permitting…
• Jeffers plays one game at Houghton at 4:00. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• L’Anse plays one game at Houghton at 6:00.
• Calumet travels to Iron Mountain.
• Hancock entertains Ontonagon.

On today’s softball schedule, weather permitting…
• Houghton plays at Negaunee.
• Hancock welcomes Westwood.
• Calumet travels to Ishpeming.
• Jeffers visits L’Anse.

The Division III regional track meet that was rained out last week is scheduled to be made up this afternoon at Lake Linden. The Copper Mountain Conference meet that was scheduled for Baraga today has been postponed to Wednesday.

NHL

In the NHL tournament…
• The one remaining second-round series will be decided tonight, as the Canucks host the Oilers. That set is tied 3-3.

NBA

In NBA Conference semifinal play last evening…
• The Pacers dispatched the Knicks 130-109. Indiana wins that Eastern Conference semifinal 4-3.
• The Timberwolves shut down the Nuggets 98-90. Minnesota takes that Western Conference semifinal 4-3.

That sets up the conference championship series. In the east, the Pacers will face the Celtics, with game one in Indiana tomorrow night. In the west, the Timberwolves will take on the Mavericks, with game one Wednesday evening.

MLB

The Tigers fell behind early in a 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks yesterday, as starter Matt Manning gave up four runs over five innings. Detroit mounted a comeback, with help from a Spencer Torkelson home run. A triple by Kerry Carpenter in the top of the seventh tied the contest, but Carpenter was thrown out at home plate while trying to extend it into an inside-the-park home run. Arizona reclaimed the lead with two runs off Tyler Holton and Alex Faedo in the bottom of the seventh. Detroit threatened in the eighth, but Matt Vierling and Gio Urshela struck out to end the inning.

The Tigers open a series at Kansas City tonight. Reese Olson will start against Michael Wacha. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and lost to the Astros 9-4 yesterday. 

The Brewers visit the Marlins tonight. Joe Ross will start against Ryan Weathers.

Horseshoes

The Copper Country Horseshoe League begins its season tonight.
• Dreamland One faces Calumet Electronics at the Dreamland Bar.
• Calumet One plays Harter’s Party Store at Agassiz Park.
• Luigi’s takes on Eva’s Hideaway at Eva’s Hideaway.
• Maple Leaf plays Ahmeek Fire Department at Ahmeek Park.
• Bucko’s meets L and L at the Calumet Dam.
• Mohawk Superette and Houghton Building Supply will play at the Gipp Recreation Area.
