Tigers Clinch Playoff Berth – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…

Some of the 2024 inductees into the CLK Athletic Hall of Fame at Friday’s football game.
  • Houghton fell at Menominee 50-0. Maroons quarterback Tanner Theuerkauf scored on a 69-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, and Menominee built up a 44-0 halftime lead. 
  • Calumet lost to Kingsford 14-0 in the annual Hall of Fame game. The Kings held the Flivvers off the board through the first half, with help from an Oskar Loukus interception. Kingsford scored on runs of nine and two yards in the third quarter. The incoming members of the CLK Athletic Hall of Fame were introduced to the crowd at halftime. The induction ceremony will begin at 11 this morning at the CLK School Commons.
  • Hancock dropped a 48-20 decision at Negaunee.
  • L’Anse lost 63-8 at Iron Mountain.
  • Forest Park buried Lake Linden-Hubbell 59-6. The Lakes’ only score came on a 73-yard pass play from Brady Axford to Nate St. Onge in the second quarter. 
  • Ontonagon fell to Gogebic 56-21.

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outlasted Baraga 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-11). Kaylynn Smith led the Blue Bolts defense with 17 digs. Macy Jurgensen recorded 39 assists, and Kiera Isaacson had 21 kills.

In volleyball today…

  • Calumet competes at the D3-D4 Showdown in Livonia. The Kings will open with pool play games against Mendon, Manchester and Allen Park-InterCity.
  • Hancock competes at the Marquette Sentinel Invitational.

In boys soccer…

  • Houghton fell to Kingsford 5-2. Josh Bennett scored the first goal off a penalty kick, Ethan Heckel netted the second goal with an assist from Grant Northey. The Gremlins host Escanaba today.

College Football

Both Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan have this week off.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team lost to seventh-ranked Ferris State 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) last evening. Jacqueline Yancy led the Huskies with 12 kills. Tess Hayes made 29 assists, and Brooke Dzwik had 12 digs.

The Huskies host Davenport today at 3.

The NMU volleyball team earned its fourth straight win, 3-1 (25-10, 25-6, 22-25, 25-17) over Davenport. Jacqueline Smith had 19 kills, and former Calumet standout Helen Beiring added seven.

The Wildcats entertain Ferris today.

College Soccer

The MTU women’s soccer team lost 2-1 at Purdue Northwest yesterday afternoon. Ryley Winrich scored the Huskies’ lone goal. Tech will play at Roosevelt University tomorrow afternoon.

The Northern women’s soccer team routed Roosevelt 6-0 yesterday, and will visit Purdue Northwest tomorrow.

The NMU men’s squad upended Purdue Northwest 3-1 yesterday. The Wildcats will host Parkside tomorrow.

MLB

For the first time in a decade, the Detroit Tigers have reached the playoffs. The Bengals clinched an American League wild card playoff berth last night with a 4-1 victory over the White Sox. The opportunistic Tigers scored two runs off Chicago wild pitches. Five Detroit hurlers allowed just three hits.

The win capped a remarkable late run by the Tigers, who have won 31 of their last 42 games. The Royals lost last night, so Detroit currently holds the second of the three American League wild card berths.

The Tigers host the White Sox again today. Detroit has not designated a starter. Sean Burke will pitch for Chicago. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The 121st loss off the summer put the White Sox into the record books with the worst-ever season in baseball’s modern era.

Rhys Hoskins belted a grand slam in the first inning, and the Brewers cruised past the Mets 8-4 last night. Gary Sánchez added a late home run. 

The Brewers visit the Mets again tonight. Jared Koenig will pitch against Jose Quintana.

Milwaukee outfielder Sal Frelick left last night’s game after crashing into an unpadded section of the right field wall while trying to make a catch. He suffered a hip injury, and will undergo an MRI this morning.

NHL

The Red Wings blanked the Blackhawks 2-0 in a preseason game last night. Christian Fischer and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for Detroit. 

The Wings welcome the Penguins tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Packers host the Vikings in a 1:00 game tomorrow. Quarterback Jordan Love and cornerback Jaire Alexander are both listed as questionable for the contest.

The Lions entertain the Seahawks Monday night on 99.3 The Lift.
