Tigers Claim One, Lose One in Rule Five Draft

MTU

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Bemidji State this weekend. Faceoffs are tomorrow at 5:07, and Sunday at 3:07.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers claimed a speedy young outfielder in yesterday’s Rule Five Draft. Akil Baddoo was claimed from the Minnesota Twins. Tigers general manager Al Avila said Baddoo has all the tools to be a major league player, even though he has seen little action in the past two years – none last summer, because of the COVID-19 shutdown, and just 29 games at Single-A Fort Myers in 2019, before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The Tigers must pay the Twins $100,000 for Baddoo. If he’s not kept on the major league roster for the entire season, he must be offered back to Minnesota for a cost of $50,000.

Detroit also lost a player in the Rule Five Draft. Pitcher Will Vest was taken by the Mariners. Vest also didn’t play last summer, but advanced quickly from Single A to Triple A in 2019.

The Milwaukee Brewers neither selected nor lost a player in the Rule Five Draft.

There are reports that former Tigers team president Dave Dombrowski will become president of baseball operations for the Philadelphia Phillies. Dombrowski’s Detroit teams won American League pennants in 2006 and 2012. He won World Series titles with the Marlins and Red Sox.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Los Angeles Rams shut down the New England Patriots 24-3.

The Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers Sunday in a 4:25 game on 99.3 The Lift. Yesterday, the Packers activated running back A.J. Dillon off the reserve/COVID-19 list.
