Aviles
Aviles

MLB
Mike Aviles’ infield single drove home Andrew Romine with the winning run, as the Detroit Tigers got past the Seattle Mariners 4-2 last night. The game started as a pitchers’ duel. Justin Verlander turned in seven strong innings, giving up just a two-run homer by Kyle Seager in the top of the sixth. The Tigers scratched out single runs against James Paxton in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game. They loaded the bases against Paxton in the eighth, and put the game away with Aviles’ soft grounder to first, and a sacrifice fly by James McCann. Bruce Rondon got the win in relief.

Sanchez
Sanchez

The Tigers host the Mariners again tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Hisashi Iwakuma. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

After last night’s game, manager Brad Ausmus said that Anibal Sanchez will return to the starting rotation. He’ll replace Matt Boyd, who was sent back to Toledo several days ago. Daniel Norris will also be brought up from Toledo, and will cover Fulmer’s scheduled start next week – apparently to give Fulmer a rest.

Blazek
Blazek

The Oakland Athletics broke open a tie game with three runs in the seventh inning, and went on to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 last night. Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson gave up just one run, but needed 105 pitches to get through five innings. The loss went to Will Smith, who gave up a triple to open the seventh… but it was Michael Blazek who allowed that runner to score, and then gave up the next two runs.

That series wraps up at Oakland this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Daniel Mengden.
