Tigers Bury Rangers in Second Straight Shutout – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Little League League Baseball

The Portage Lake Little League Majors team fell to Taylor North 10-0 yesterday in their final pool contest at the state tournament in Grosse Pointe Farms. The game meant very little, since Portage Lake had already clinched a berth in the quarterfinals by winning its first two pool contests. Team officials said they used the opportunity to set up their pitching for the stretch run. The championship portion of the tourney begins today, and is single-elimination. Portage Lake will face Saint Clair this morning at 10:00 in their quarterfinal game.

If you would like to support the team’s trip downstate, you can contribute through their GoFundMe page here.

MLB

Miguel Cabrera drove in five runs, as the Detroit Tigers blasted the Texas Rangers 14-0 last night. The Tigers scored two in the fourth, four in the fifth, and put the game away with seven runs in the sixth inning. They racked up 19 hits, including four for Victor Reyes, and three for Isaac Parades. Akil Baddoo homered. Still under a pitch count, Casey Mize allowed just one hit over four innings. Four relievers completed Detroit’s second straight shutout.

Detroit catcher Jake Rogers was scratched before last night’s game. A right forearm strain was diagnosed. He was quickly placed on the injured list, and is expected to miss two to three weeks. Grayson Greiner was called up from Toledo. Because the Mud Hens had an off day, Greiner was at his home in suburban Detroit. He arrived during the second inning.

The Tigers have agreed to contract terms with two of their selections in the recent MLB draft. Right-hander Ty Madden, the 32nd overall pick, has signed. So has right-hander Tyler Mattison, who was their fourth-round choice.
