Tigers, Brewers Win Slugfests – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
Local teams struggled at the Superior Dome track meet yesterday. With nine teams competing, the Hancock boys placed eighth, and the girls fifth. The L’Anse boys finished ninth, and the girls eighth. On the boys side, L’Anse’s Foster Miller won the 200-meter run, and took second place in the 55-meter. The Hancock 4×200-meter relay team placed third, and Jake Lang took second in the pole vault, and fourth in the high jump. On the girls side, Hancock’s Ellie Sturo won the 1600-meter run, and placed second in the 800-meter. Ally Fenton took second in the pole vault, and Katherine Jarvis placed second in the shot put. Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team’s doubleheaders at Maranatha Baptist scheduled for today and tomorrow have been canceled because of poor field conditions.

The Lions men’s basketball team has added another incoming freshman. Joe Heinonen averaged 18 points per game with Superior Central last season.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers completed a sweep of their series against the Baltimore Orioles with a 13-8 victory yesterday. The Tigers built a 12-3 lead by the end of the fifth inning. The big blow was a grand slam by Leonys Martin. Jeimer Candelario had four hits, including a two-run homer. Jordan Zimmermann gave up four runs before leaving in the sixth inning, and got the win. Chad Bell and Drew VerHagen each gave up a pair of runs in relief.

The Tigers will host the Kansas City Royals in a day-night doubleheader today. The afternoon game is make-up of April 4th’s snowout. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Jakob Junis. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift. Daniel Norris will start against Jason Hammel in the regularly-scheduled game tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

After last night’s game, the Tigers optioned Bell to Toledo. They’ll call one player up to fill his spot this morning, and will add another player for today only, because of the doubleheader.

The Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the Miami Marlins 12-3 last night. Ryan Braun punched a three-run homer. Lorenzo Cain hit a solo shot, and scored four times. Chase Anderson pitched into the sixth, gave up three runs, and earned the win. Former Brewer Lewis Brinson hit two solo home runs for Miami.

The Brewers host the Marlins again tonight. Jhoulys Chacin will pitch against Trevor Richards.

NHL
In NHL playoff action last night…
– Boston defeated Toronto 3-1. The Bruins lead that series 3-1.
– Washington downed Columbus 4-1. That set is tied 2-2.

Tonight…
– Philadelphia skates at Pittsburgh. The Penguins lead that series 3-1.
– Minnesota visits Winnipeg. The Jets are up 3-1 in that series.
– Colorado plays at Nashville. The Avalanche lead that set 3-1.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night…
– Philadelphia beat Miami 128-108. The 76ers lead that series 2-1.
– New Orleans downed Portland 119-102. The Pelicans are up 3-0 in that set.
– Golden State defeated San Antonio 110-97. The Warriors lead that set 3-0.

Tonight…
– Cleveland tips off at Indiana. That series is tied 1-1.
– Toronto plays at Washington. The Wizards lead that series 2-0.
– Boston visits Milwaukee. The Celtics are up 2-0 in that series.

NFL
Schedules for the 2018 NFL season have been released. Highlights for the Detroit Lions include a Monday night game against the Jets in week one, a Sunday night contest against the Patriots in week three, and the traditional Thanksgiving game against the Bears. The Packers have five prime time games: Sunday nights against the Bears in week one, the Patriots in week nine, and the Vikings in week 12; a Thursday contest against the Seahawks in week 11; and a Monday night game against the 49ers. The Lions and Packers will meet in Detroit in week five, and in Green Bay to close the regular season in week 17.
