The Detroit Tigers scored six runs in the first inning, and cruised to an 11-0 win over the Houston Astros yesterday. James McCann’s grand slam was the big blow in the opening frame. Miguel Cabrera homered in the fifth and again in the seventh, and Justin Upton also homered in the seventh. Mike Pelfrey earned the win, but left the game after the fifth inning with tightness in his back. He’ll undergo an MRI today.
After sweeping the Astros, the Tigers have today off, and begin a home set against the Chicago White Sox tomorrow night. Anibal Sanchez will pitch against James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 yesterday. Chris Carter and Keon Broxton homered, and Matt Garza gave up two runs over five innings to get the win.
The Brewers open a series in San Diego against the Padres tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Jarred Cosart, who was traded to the Padres Friday from the Marlins.
Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy will not be joining the Cleveland Indians. The two teams had worked out a deal for the All-Star catcher, but Lucroy’s contract includes a no-trade clause, and he declined to waive it. Reports say that he asked the Indians to forego their option on extending his contract, and the team refused. He also asked for assurances that he would remain the club’s starting catcher next season when Jan Gomes returns from injury, and no assurance was provided. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Lucroy will be staying in Milwaukee – the Texas Rangers are said to be interested. The non-waiver trade deadline is 4:00 this afternoon. Lucroy didn’t start yesterday’s game because of the pending trade, but did pinch-hit in the eighth inning, and received a huge round of applause from the Milwaukee fans.
The Indians did add one weapon for the stretch run. They picked up closer Andrew Miller from the New York Yankees in exchange for four prospects. Miller is a former Tiger, who was traded to the Marlins in 2007 in the Miguel Cabrera deal. Cleveland leads the Tigers by four-and-a-half games in the American League Central Division.
High School
Equipment issue for the Calumet High School football team will be held at Agassiz Field this evening. Seniors and juniors should report at 6:00, and sophomores and freshmen at 6:30. The first practice will begin a week from today, at 8:00 am.
