MLB

The Tigers held off the Mariners 5-4 last night, in their first game after the all star break. Detroit grabbed an early lead when Kerry Carpenter knocked a two-run homer in the first inning. Akil Baddoo added a solo shot in the fifth, and Nick Maton’s two-run blast in the seventh proved to be the game winner. Eduardo Rodriguez gave up two runs over five innings, and earned the win. The Mariners scored single runs in the eighth and ninth, but Alex Lange was able to close out the game.

Maton had just rejoined the team, after having been recalled from Toledo. He took the roster spot vacated by outfielder Jake Marisnick, who was waived and signed a free agent contract with the Dodgers.

The Tigers play in Seattle again tonight. Michael Lorenzen will start against George Kirby. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Former Tigers infielder Jonathan Schoop has cleared waivers, and has been granted a release. He can now sign a free agent deal with any team.

The Brewers shaded the Reds 1-0 last night. Corbin Burnes tossed six two-hit innings and struck out 13, and the bullpen allowed no more hits. Victor Caratini singled home Willy Adames in the top of the seventh for the game’s only run.

Those teams meet again tonight in Cincinnati. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Andrew Abbott.

Running

The annual Hancock Canal Run is being staged this morning. Because of the race, Quincy Street will be closed in the western portion of downtown Hancock. Some roads being used for the race between Hancock and McLain State Park will have lane limitations and lowered speed limits. Please drive carefully
