Tigers, Brewers Open MLB Season Today – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers will open their season this afternoon against the Blue Jays at Toronto. Jordan Zimmermann will start for the Tigers. Marcus Stroman will counter for the Blue Jays. Opening Day coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers will begin their regular season this afternoon at home against the Saint Louis Cardinals. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Miles Mikolas.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have recalled Martin Frk from the Grand Rapids Griffins to help fill some of the gaps left because of injuries. Luke Glendening and Anthony Mantha are hurt, but are likely to play tonight. Thomas Vanek and Michael Rasmussen are out, and coach Jeff Blashill said yesterday that Rasmussen will probably be shut down for the rest of the season.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Orlando Magic tonight.

NFL

Former Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson has announced his retirement. Nelson spent a decade as one of Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets, then signed with the Oakland Raiders last year. He was released by the Raiders two weeks ago.

MTU

Former Michigan Tech hockey forward Dylan Steman has signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Hersey Bears of the American Hockey League. The Bears are part of the Washington Capitals’ minor league system.

Sled Hockey

Sled Hockey U.P. will present an opportunity to try sled hockey from 1:00 until 3:00 Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena. Sled hockey provides an opportunity for many with disabilities to enjoy the game of hockey. The event is sponsored by the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association, the Copper Country Oldtimers, and Portage Lake MultiPurpose Educational services.

The Calumet Wolverines and the Portage Lake Pioneers will open the Great Lakes Hockey League playoffs tomorrow. The Pioneers will face the Fox Cities Ice Dogs at 9:00 in the morning, and then play the West Bend Bombers at 5:15 in the afternoon. The Wolverines will take on the Eagle River Falcons at 10:30 Friday night, and then play the De Pere Deacons Saturday morning at 9:00. Hear all of their games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
