The Detroit Red Wings host the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. Detroit is tied in the standings with Philadelphia for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot, but the Flyers have played one less game.
The Wings may be looking for a new assistant coach. ESPN is reporting that Tony Granato will be named the next head coach at the University of Wisconsin. Granato skated for the Badgers in the mid-’80s. He’s been overseeing defense and penalty killing for Detroit.
Former MTU hockey star Blake Pietila earned his first NHL assist yesterday. He helped set up a goal by Travis Zajak in the second period of the New Jersey Devils’ 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons entertain Oklahoma City tomorrow night.
NCAA
The Final Four is set for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Last night, Virginia advanced with a 101-86 victory over Indiana. The Cavaliers will face Syracuse in the semifinals. The 10th-seeded Orange stunned Midwest top-seed Virginia 68-62 last night. Villanova and Oklahoma will play in the other semifinal Saturday night. Hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Ferris State’s run in the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament ended with a 6-3 loss to Denver in the quarterfinals yesterday. The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 5-4 overtime victory over St. Cloud State Saturday. The University of Michigan lost its quarterfinal game to North Dakota 5-2 on Saturday.
MLB
In spring training baseball yesterday, half of the Houston Astros defeated all of the Detroit Tigers 8-3. Mike Pelfrey gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings. Bruce Rondon gave up two home runs in less than an inning of relief. James McCann doubled and homered. The Tigers face the Yankees tonight.
The Tigers assigned catcher Raffy Lopez and utility player John Mayberry Jr. to minor league camp yesterday. Both will likely wind up at Toledo.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost to Cleveland 10-3 yesterday. Taylor Jungmann turned in four shutout innings, then was charged with four runs before leaving with two outs in the fifth. Scooter Gennett homered twice. The Brewers face Cincinnati tonight.
The Calumet Wolverines and the Portage Lake Pioneers will decide the Gibson Cup series tomorrow night. Our coverage from Dee Stadium will begin around 7:10. Both teams will open play in the Great Lakes Hockey League Tournament in DePere on Friday. Hear their games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
