Tigers, Brewers Cruise – Friday Sports Wrap

Machado

MLB
The Detroit Tigers opened up an early lead, and cruised past the San Francisco Giants 6-2 yesterday afternoon. Dixon Machado hit his first major league home run. Anibal Sanchez pitched five shutout innings, then gave up two runs in the sixth. He struck out eight, and earned his first win of the season.

The Tigers open a series at Cleveland tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Carlos Carrasco. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Struggling starter Daniel Norris has been placed on the 10-day disabled list because of a groin injury. Team officials said he had been trying to play over the problem for some time. Blaine Hardy has been called up from Toledo to fill in.

Davies

Zach Davies won his 10th game of the season, as the Milwaukee Brewers clobbered the Chicago Cubs 11-2 yesterday. Milwaukee broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning. Ryan Braun homered. Davies gave up two runs over six innings.

The Brewers begin a set against the Yankees in New York tonight. Junior Guerra will pitch against Jordan Montgomery.

Milwaukee has placed outfielder Eric Sogard on the 10-day disabled list. He’s been dealing with a sore ankle. Yadiel Rivera has been brought up from Colorado Springs.

Durocher Tournament
The Copper Country Twilight League will host the 2017 Leo Durocher Memorial Hardball Tournament this weekend. Action at the Stanton field begins tonight at 6:30, as REL/Mohawk Technologies faces Superior National Bank/Stanton. Tomorrow, Dean Kangas/State Farm plays Wolverine/Orbit at 10:00… REL/Mohawk Technologies meets the Negaunee Tri City North Stars at noon. Dean Kangas/State Farm plays the Channing Railroaders at 2:15. The Negaunee Tri City North Stars take on Superior National Bank/Stanton at 4:15. Wolverine/Orbit plays the Channing Railroaders at 6:30.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have extended their minor league affiliation agreement with the Grand Rapids Griffins through the 2021-2022 season. The Griffins have been Detroit’s top affiliate for 15 years.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons have signed journeyman free-agent center Eric Moreland. Moreland was an NBA G League All-Star last season with the Canton Charge. He’ll replace Aron Baynes, who opted out of his contract with Detroit for next season.

Frisbee
Flying Disc Sports Week activities continue today with a disc golf tournament at the Calumet course, along with freestyle, distance and speed, and dog Frisbee demonstrations at Agassiz Field in Calumet. The expanded activities lead up to the 60th annual International Frisbee Tournament at Agassiz Field tomorrow and Sunday, and the Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday evening at the Colosseum.
