MLB

The Tigers held the Royals to just four hits in a 3-0 victory yesterday. Michael Lorenzen tossed seven innings, and stretched his scoreless innings streak to 21-2/3rds – the longest in the majors. Detroit got all the runs it needed in the second, on RBI singles by Andy Ibáñez and Eric Haase. Spencer Torkelson’s sacrifice fly in the fifth added an insurance tally.

The Tigers host the Padres tonight. Reese Olson will start against Seth Lugo. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers gave up just two hits, and blanked the Phillies 4-0 yesterday. Christian Yelich hit a three-run homer, and Corbin Burnes struck out 10 over eight innings.

The Brewers host the Braves this evening. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Michael Soroka.

Twilight League

In Twilight Baseball League play last evening…
• Houghton Building Supply-Stanton defeated Northern Driveline 6-3.

NFL

On the eve of the opening of training camp, the Lions released kicker Michael Badgley yesterday. Badgley was picked up by Detroit last October, and stabilized the team’s weak kicking game by making 20 of 24 field goals and all 33 extra point attempts in 12 games. That leaves Riley Patterson and Parker Romo to battle for the placekicking job. Patterson lost the Lions’ preseason competition last year. He went on to kick for the Jaguars, who recently traded him back to Detroit for a low draft pick. Romo was named an XFL all-star this year.
