Tigers Break Losing Streak – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Sara Johnson and Levi Frahm are this year’s recipients of Jeffers High School’s Kujula Award, as the Jets’ the top senior athletes.

The outstanding senior athletes are chosen from individuals that have demonstrated exceptional performance in their athletics career at Jeffers High School, played and lettered in multiple sports, and earned post-season recognition in at least one sport (All Conference, All-UP, All-State, Conference Awards).

Johnson played volleyball and basketball over the past four years. In basketball, she earned second team All Copper Mountain Conference in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. In volleyball, she earned All Copper Mountain Conference second team honors as a Sophomore, first team honors as a Junior, and Elite team honors as a Senior. She helped Jeffers volleyball win a 2022 District Championship and in 2023, led Jeffers to a 22-2 record and a Copper Mountain Conference Championship. As a volleyball player, she has set these school records: most service aces in a season with 69, most service aces in a career with 171, most career digs with 637, most assists in the season with 150, and most assists in a career with 455.

Frahm set school records in basketball, including most points in a season (525) and most points in a career (1583), single-season free throw percentage (80%), and most three-pointers made in a career (223). For the past two seasons, he was named the Copper Mountain Conference basketball player of the year. In 2024, he was named to the ALL-UP Dream Team and D3 Second Team All-State team. In baseball Frahm helped Jeffers win their first-ever regional championship in 2023. He was named to the all-conference first team three times, and Pitcher of the Year in 2022. The Jets have won four straight Copper Mountain Conference championships and two district championships. Frahm led the Jeffers boys basketball to new levels of success, with a cumulative four-year record of 84-10, the Copper Mountain Conference championship four years in a row, three District Championships, and the first-ever Division 4 regional championship in school history in 2023.

NHL

In the NHL tournament, Barclay Goodrow’s overtime goal gave the Rangers a 2-1 victory over the Panthers last night. The Eastern Conference championship series is tied 1-1, and continues tomorrow afternoon in Miami.

The Western Conference series continues tonight, as the Stars host the Oilers. Edmonton leads that series 1-0.

NBA

In the NBA tournament, Luca Doncic’s jumper with three seconds remaining lifted the Mavericks to a 109-108 victory over the Timberwolves. Dallas leads the Western Conference championship series 2-0, with game three tomorrow in Dallas.

The Pacers welcome the Celtics tonight. Boston has a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference championship series.

MLB

The Tigers snapped their five-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays last evening. Kenta Maeda returned from the injured list, and scattered four hits over five shutout innings. Toronto’s runs came in the ninth, off Andrew Chafin. Colt Keith hit his first major league home run. Kerry Carpenter also knocked one out.

The Tigers continue that home series against the Blue Jays today. Reese Olson will start against José Berríos. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

To make room for Maeda on the roster, Matt Manning was sent back to Toledo.

The Brewers took an early lead, and cruised past the Red Sox 7-2. William Contreros homered, and Christian Yelich had three hits.

That series continues in Boston this afternoon. Colin Rea will start against Nick Pivetta.

Cycling

Ride the Keweenaw continues today, with guided rides at the Michigan Tech Trails in Houghton, the Churning Rapids Trails in Hancock, and the Swedetown Trails in Calumet, along with a Family Enduro at the Tech Trails. Tomorrow’s activities are centered in Copper Harbor, and include the Lake Superior Gravity Series Enduro, along with Art Bike at the Harbor, and live music. Roller Derby

Keweenaw Roller Derby will open its 10th season with their Solar System Smackdown Mixer tonight at the Colosseum. Doors open at 5, and skating begins at 6. Tickets are just $5 and children under 10 get in free.
