Tigers Break Cleveland Spell – Thursday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Tigers cast off the hex yesterday, and clubbed the Cleveland Indians 12-2. The Tigers looked to be on the way to their 12th straight loss to the Tribe this season, after Cleveland scored single runs in the second and third innings off Michael Fulmer. Detroit stormed back, though. Cameron Maybin homered as they scored three runs in the fourth. Nick Castellanos homered as they added five runs in the fifth. Castellanos doubled in two more as Detroit tacked on four more runs in the seventh. He finished with five RBI. Fulmer completed six innings and got his ninth win of the season. Shane Greene, Kyle Ryan and Bobby Parnell each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

The Tigers open a four-game set against the Blue Jays at Toronto tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Drew Hutchison. Hear the first pitch at 7:07 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Washington Nationals 7-4 yesterday. Matt Garza was hit hard again, giving up three home runs, and all seven Washington runs, before leaving in the fifth inning.

The Brewers have today off, and begin a weekend home series against the Saint Louis Cardinals tomorrow night. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Michael Wacha.

Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball
In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play last night, Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Northern Michigan Land Brokers 13-2. Sarah Audette was the winning pitcher. No result was provided for Northern Michigan Land Brokers’ game against Mattila Rock and Dock.

The Detroit Red Wings filed for salary arbitration with goalie Petr Mrazek yesterday. Negotiations between Mrazek and the club will continue, in hopes of avoiding a hearing later this summer. The Wings also continue talks with Danny DeKeyser, who filed for arbitration Tuesday. Backup goalie Jared Coreau had also filed for arbitration, but he and the team have agreed to a two-year deal that will allow him to play either in Detroit or Grand Rapids.

Finlandia University has introduced 18 new players who will join the Lions’ softball team next season. Three are from Michigan, two are from Wisconsin, and the rest come from as far away as Texas and California. Meet the new recruits here.

The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club will hold its annual free Kids’ Fishing Derby Saturday from 9:00 until 1:00 at the Swedetown Pond. All kids get a free hot dog lunch, goody bag, and a chance to win prizes for the biggest fish. The club will provide bait, and has a limited supply of rods to borrow. Please bring your own rod if you have one.
