The Detroit Tigers pounded out 17 hits, and outslugged the Minnesota Twins 10-8 yesterday. Sergio Alcántara became the eighth Tiger to homer in his first major league at-bat. Known for his defense, he hit just nine home runs in seven seasons in the minor leagues. Willi Castro also homered, and Grayson Greiner’s shot in the eighth inning gave the Tigers the lead for good. Starter Casey Mize struggled again, giving up three runs over four innings. Kyle Funkhouser earned his first major league win in relief, and Bryan Garcia claimed his first major league save.
The Tigers and Twins wrap up their series in Minnesota this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Michael Pineda. Coverage begins at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Cleveland Indians 4-1 yesterday. Brett Anderson gave up all four Cleveland runs over five innings, and took the loss.
The Brewers have today off, and begin a set against the Tigers tomorrow.
Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Brock has died. Over 19 seasons – first with the Cubs, but mostly with the Cardinals – he stole 938 bases, and knocked 3,023 hits. Tigers fans remember him from the 1968 World Series, when he hit .464 and stole seven bases. Brock was 81. He had battled diabetes and cancer in recent years.
NHL
The Stars opened their NHL Western Conference final with a 1-0 victory over the Golden Knights last night. That series continues tomorrow.
The Islanders and Lightning begin their Eastern Conference championship series tonight.
NBA
The Bucks staved off elimination by defeating the Heat 118-115 in overtime yesterday. Miami leads that Eastern Conference semifinal 3-1. In the other Eastern Conference semifinal, the Celtics face the Raptors today. That set is tied 2-2.
In the Western Conference, the Lakers outscored the Rockets 117-109 yesterday. That semifinal series is tied 1-1. The Clippers take on the Nuggets tonight. That semifinal set is also tied 1-1.
NFL
The Detroit Lions have lost running back Jason Huntley to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Lions had hoped Huntley would clear waivers, and they could keep him on the practice squad.
The Lions’ practice squad will include quarterback David Blough, who started five games for Detroit last season, after injuries knocked out Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel. It also includes long snapper Steve Wirtel, who nearly unseated 17-year veteran Don Muhlbach in training camp. Punter Arryn Siposs, who lost a close competition with Jack Fox, is also on the squad.
