MLB – Angels Blank Tigers
The Detroit Tigers’ offensive struggles continued last night, as they fell to the Los Angeles Angels 2-0, Anibal Sanchez took the tough loss, giving up two runs on six hits, and striking out nine over seven innings. Detroit collected only four hits. The Tigers did load the bases in the eighth inning, but Yoenis Cespedes struck out to end the threat.

The Tigers continue that series in Los Angeles tonight. Shane Greene will start against Jered Weaver. Hear the first pitch at 10:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 last night. The Diamondbacks belted four home runs in the game. The game was tied until the eighth inning, when Jonathan Broxton gave the game-winning homer to Nick Ahmed. Broxton took the loss. A.J. Pollock’s two-run shot off Corey Knebel in the ninth put the game away.

The Brewers continue that home series against the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Kyle Lohse will start against Jeremy Hellickson.

Milwaukee has called Tyler Wagner up from their Double-A farm team in Biloxi to fill in for the injured Wily Peralta in the starting rotation. Wagner will make his major-league debut tomorrow. The Brewers have placed reliever Brandon Kintzler on the disabled list with tendinitis in his left knee. Kintzler had been designated for assignment on Thursday, but that was rescinded after the injury was diagnosed. He underwent surgery on that knee during the offseason.

High School
At the boys Division Two U.P. high school golf tournament at the Wawanowin Country Club yesterday, Hancock finished fourth, and L’Anse came in sixth. Individually, Dylan Paavola of the Bulldogs placed fifth, and Ray Miron from L’Anse was sixth. See full results here.

In the high school baseball tournament, Houghton faces Superior Central in the District semifinal this afternoon at Negaunee. The championship game will also be played this afternoon.

Track and field athletes will compete at the Upper Peninsula Championships today at Kingsford.

Finlandia Adds Men’s Soccer Recruits
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has received commitments from 10 additional student athletes to play next season. The group includes student athletes from nine states. This is the second set of recruits that coach Brent Chase has announced this summer. Read about them here.

MTU’s Roy Signs with CFL Team
Former Michigan Tech football player Austin Roy has signed a professional contract with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Roy is a native of Lively, Ontario. He started all 11 games for Tech at right tackle last fall.

Stanton Run Today
The Stanton 5-mile Run/Walk will be held today. The walk will start at 8:30 at North Canal Park, and the run begins at 9:00. Both will end at the Kenner Dome at Oskar Bay. Park at the Kenner Dome, and shuttle buses will bring you to the starting point. The kids’ fun run will start at 10:15 at the Kenner Dome. For more details, click here.
