Tigers Blanked on Opening Day – Friday Sports Wrap

NHL

Jake Walman’s goal with four seconds remaining in regulation gave the Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the Hurricanes last night. Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Larkin also scored for Detroit. Alex Nedeljkovic made 31 saves.

The Wings visit the Jets tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has called up forward Marco Kasper from Rogle BK of the Swedish Hockey League. Kasper is 18 years old, and was the Wings’ eighth pick overall in the 2022 Entry Draft.

GLHL

The Great Lakes Hockey League tournament begins today. This year’s tourney is being hosted by the Calumet Wolverines. Most games will be played at the Colosseum, but two opening-round games will be staged today at Dee Stadium.

College Hockey

Central Collegiate Hockey League champion Minnesota State is looking for a new head coach. After leading the Mavericks to five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, Mike Hastings has been named the new head coach at the University of Wisconsin.

Two more former Michigan Tech Huskies have embarked on professional careers. Forward David Jankowski has signed a contract with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers. Forward Tristan Ashbrook is also headed to the ECHL, with the Savannah Ghost Pirates.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Rockets this evening.

MLB

The Tigers were blanked 4-0 by the Rays in their season-opener yesterday. Eduardo Rodriguez took the loss, giving up a run in the third, and leaving as the Rays scored two more in the sixth. Austin Meadows had three of Detroit’s six hits. It was the first opening-day shutout for the Tigers since 1989.

The Tigers have today off, and play at Tampa again tomorrow. Spencer Turnbull will face Zach Eflin. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers began their season with a 4-0 loss to the Cubs. All of Chicago’s runs came in the third inning, off Corbin Burnes.

Milwaukee plays the Cubs in Chicago again tomorrow afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will start against Justin Steele.
