In high school cross country, local teams will compete at the Calumet Invitational at the Swedetown Trails this afternoon. The meet was postponed from Monday because of poor weather.

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team plays at Ripon College this afternoon.

Miguel Cabrera’s three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 6-3 rain-shortened victory over the Cleveland Indians last night. Play was interrupted for 45 minute in the fourth inning, and the skies reopened after the fifth. With no weather relief in sight, umpires ended the game early. Ian Kinsler also homered for Detroit.
The Tigers play their final home game this afternoon against the Indians. Daniel Norris will pitch against Ryan Merritt, who will make his first major league start. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Baltimore won, so Detroit remains a game behind in the race for the final American League wild card playoff berth.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold a late lead, and lost to the Texas Rangers 8-5 last night. The Brewers led by a run in the eighth inning, but the Rangers put two runners on base against Corey Knebel. With two outs, Tyler Thornburg replaced Knebel, and gave up an RBI single to Elvis Andrus, and a three-run homer to Carlos Gomez.
The Brewers have today off, and open their final series of the season tomorrow night at Colorado. Brent Suter will pitch against Chad Bettis.

Brian Hoyer will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears when they face the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Bears’ starter Jay Cutler is out with an injured thumb.

The Detroit Red Wings got off to a quick start, and skated past the Boston Bruins 5-1 in preseason play at Boston last night. The Wings built a 4-0 lead by midway through the second period. Steve Ott had a goal and two assists, and Jared Coreau stopped 34 shots in goal. The Wings will host the Bruins tomorrow night. Listen for regular-season Detroit games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
