Tigers Advance in MLB Playoffs – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball tonight…

  • Houghton plays at Hancock. Coverage will begin around 6:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Jeffers travels to Wakefield-Marenisco.
  • Calumet journeys to Marquette.
  • Ontonagon hosts Watersmeet.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek welcomes Bessemer.

At the Ewen-Trout Creek cross country meet yesterday…

  • The host Panthers won the girls team title. Baraga and Chassell finished second and third. Individually, Chassell’s Sylvia Aho finished third. Ewen’s Bree Besonan placed fourth, and Sophie Desrochers of Baraga finished fifth.
  • Jeffers won the boys team competition, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City third. Landon Larson of the Jets claimed first place individually. Joshua Gaunt paced the Blue Bolts with a seventh-place finish.

The Houghton boys soccer team entertains Marquette tonight.

College Soccer

The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team fell 2-0 to St. Cloud State yesterday.

MLB

The Tigers stunned the Astros 5-2 yesterday, and advanced to the American League Divisional Series. Parker Meadows’ solo homer in the top of the sixth broke a scoreless tie. After Houston scored two in the bottom of the seventh, Detroit plated four runs in the top of the eighth to secure the win. The big blow was a bases-loaded double by Andy Ibáñez.

The Tigers will face the Guardians in a divisional series beginning Saturday in Cleveland. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.  

The Brewers downed the Mets 5-3 to tie their wild card series at a win per team. Jackson Chourio hit two home runs, and Garrett Mitchell knocked one out.

That series will be decided in Milwaukee tonight. Tobias Myers will start against Jose Quintana.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Maple Leafs in a preseason contest tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In tonight’s NFL game, the Buccaneers visit the Falcons. Television coverage will be restricted to Amazon Prime subscribers. Radio coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

There are three running events scheduleD for the area Saturday.

  • The 5k POW/MIA Run raises money for the Hubbell VFW Post. Onsite registration begins at 8:00 at the ROTC Building at Michigan Tech. Get more details and sign up online here.
  • The Tech Trails Trot includes a 10k, a 5k, and a 2k kids run. It’s a fundraiser for the Michigan Tech cross country team. The first race will begin at 9 am. Register online here
