Tentative OK for WestPAC Expansion – Thursday Sports Wrap

Five central Upper Peninsula schools received tentative acceptance into the Western Peninsula Athletic Conference yesterday. Gwinn, Iron Mountain, Ishpeming, Westwood and Negaunee all want to become full members. Officials from the current WestPAC full member schools… Calumet, Hancock, Houghton, L’Anse, and West Iron County… voted a conditional approval to those applications. Calumet High School Athletic Director Sean Jacques said that adding that many schools will present scheduling challenges that still need to be worked out. He anticipates a meeting will be held early next month to begin sorting out the details. Along with the full-sports applicants, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Norway, Bark River-Harris and Munising are set to begin football play in the WestPAC next fall. Northland Pines, Hurley and the Gogebic Miners also schedule football in the WestPAC.

NBA
Tobias Harris scored 27 points, as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Charlotte Hornets 102-90 in their NBA season-opener last night. Detroit overcame some early foul trouble that limited playing time for Andre Drummond and Avery Bradley. Drummond still led the team with 12 rebounds. The Pistons play the Wizards at Washington tomorrow night.

NHL
The Toronto Maple Leafs scored four goals off their first five shots, and cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings last night. Jimmy Howard was replaced in goal early by Petr Mrazek. Nick Jensen had three assists for Detroit. The Wings visit the Washington Capitals tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The Chicago Cubs avoided elimination in the National League Championship Series with a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. L-A leads the series three games to one, and could advance to the World Series with a victory in Chicago tonight.

The New York Yankees blanked the Houston Astros 5-0 yesterday. After falling behind two games to none in the American League Championship Series, the Yankees now lead three games to two. Game six will be played tomorrow in Houston.

NFL

LSPR
The Lake Superior Performance Rally opens tomorrow afternoon in Houghton. Fans can see the cars at the Parc Exposé beginning at 1:00 at the Country Inn and Suites. The first car will hit the course at 2:50, for competition on stages in Baraga and southern Houghton counties. A second Parc Exposé will be held Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 at L’Anse Waterfront Park. Spectators are invited to view the final stage, which will again be held along a half-mile stretch of Lakeshore Drive in Houghton beginning Saturday at 5:45. There are also designated areas where spectators can watch the race in action. You’ll find maps and complete race details here.
