Tech Women’s Hoops Extends Home Court Winning Streak – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The regular high school hockey season concluded Saturday…
• Calumet lost 2-1 to University Liggett.
• Jeffers fell to Escanaba 6-2.

Houghton High School standout Landon Stevens has signed a tender with the Odessa Jackalopes of the North American Hockey League.

The hockey playoffs open with regional semifinal games Thursday at the SDC. Houghton will face Jeffers at 5:30, and Calumet will play Hancock at 7:30. Coverage of both games will begin at 5:10 on KBear 102.3.

Marquette swept the U.P. high school swimming championships Saturday. The Houghton boys finished second, and the girls placed fifth in the team rankings. Individually for the Gremlins, Johannes Myhre won the 100 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. See full meet results here.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team defeated Parkside 68-58 Saturday. Ellie Mackay scored 17 points, as the Huskies remained unbeaten on their home court.

The Tech men’s team lost 76-58 to Parkside. Adam Hobson led the Huskies with 15 points.

Both Northern Michigan teams defeated Purdue-Northwest Saturday – the women 65-61, and the men 84-78.

The Finlandia University men’s team downed Maranatha Baptist 82-65. John Schutz scored 27 points, and set a new school record by completing six of seven three-pointers. The Lions conclude their season with a record of 4-21.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team had the weekend off, and will close the regular season at Minnesota State next weekend.

Northern Michigan University hockey dumped Ferris State 8-3 Saturday.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team ended its season with an 11-0 loss at Concordia-Wisconsin Saturday. The Lions were outshot 63-24, and conclude their campaign with a record of 0-25.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 4-1 Saturday night.

NHL

The Red Wings’ five-game win streak ended with a 4-2 loss at Seattle Saturday night. Pius Suter and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. Ville Husso made 22 saves.

The Wings visit the Capitals Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

Because of the all-star break, the Pistons are off until they visit the Magic Thursday night.
