Tech Hoops Splits at Malone
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team opened its GLIAC schedule with a 65-58 victory at Malone last night. With Jillian Richie and Danielle Blake on the bench for much of the game because of foul trouble, Brenna Heise led the Huskies with 12 points. The Huskies trailed by a point when Richie sank a three-pointer with a little more than two minutes remaining. She, Kelli Guy and Kerry Gardner then sank a series of eight free throws to seal the win.
The 20th-ranked Tech men’s team was upended 65-59 at Malone last night. The Huskies came back from a nine-point halftime deficit to take the lead late in the game, but couldn’t put it away. Ben Stelzer kept Tech in the game with 15 points in the first half, but added only four more in the second.
Both Tech teams will play at Walsh tomorrow.
Tech hockey has the weekend off.
NMU Sweeps at Walsh
Both Northern Michigan basketball teams won at Walsh last night… the men 70-61… and the women 70-65.
Both NMU teams will play at Malone tomorrow.
The NMU hockey team entertains Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow night.
Finlandia Women’s Hoops Wins
The Finlandia women’s basketball team got off to a strong start, and defeated Crown College 55-45 last night. The Lions used an early 11-point run to build an eight-point halftime lead, and led by as many as 19 early in the second half. Marissa Burke scored 28 for the Lions, and Houghton’s Kelsie Richards added 11. Both Finlandia hoops teams entertain Northland College tomorrow. The women’s game starts at 5:30, and the men’s game at 7:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.
The Finlandia men’s hockey team skates at Concordia-Wisconsin tonight and tomorrow afternoon. The women’s team plays at Lake Forest College tonight and tomorrow.
Pioneers, Wolverines Open GLHL Play
The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines open their Great Lakes Hockey League seasons with a home-and-home series against each other this weekend. Faceoffs are at 7:30 tonight at the Colosseum, and tomorrow at Dee Stadium.
NHL – Red Wings Defeat Stars
Darren Helm scored twice, as the Red Wings defeated the Stars 5-2 last night. Stephen Weiss added a goal and an assist, and Jimmy Howard stopped 22 shots. The Wings host the Rangers tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
After weeks of speculation, Daniel Alfredsson made it official yesterday, announcing his retirement at a press conference in Ottawa. Alfredsson skated for 17 years with the Senators, before spending his final season in Detroit. He signed a one-day contract with Ottawa, so he could retire as a Senator. He holds that club’s career records for goals, assists and points.
NBA – Pistons Host Philly Tomorrow
The Pistons entertain the 76ers tomorrow night.
NFL – ‘Boys Best Bears
In last night’s NFL game, the Cowboys outscored the Bears 41-28.
On Sunday, the Lions host the Buccaneers. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Packers welcome the Falcons in the Monday night game.
