Tech Women Fall, Men Win in OT – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school girls basketball last night…
– Hancock edged Ontonagon 35-32 in overtime.
– Calumet outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 68-39. Brea Johnson led the Copper Kings with 17 points. Laura Lyons scored 17 for the Lakes.
– Ewen-Trout Creek doubled up Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 72-36.
– L’Anse defeated Jeffers 53-40.

In the final local girls regular-season game tonight, Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Watersmeet.

In boys action last night, Houghton defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 50-26.

On the boys schedule tonight…
– Houghton welcomes Westwood.
– Hancock travels to West Iron County.
– Calumet hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Jeffers entertains L’Anse.
– Baraga journeys to Watersmeet.
– Ontonagon heads to Bessemer.

In high school hockey last night…
– Dawson McKay’s hat trick led Houghton to a 6-3 victory over Escanaba. Ty Halonen, Clayton Sayen and Taavi Rajala also scored for the Gremlins.  Jimmy Pietila stopped 13 shots, as Houghton outshot the Eskymos 48-16.
– Hancock downed Kingsford 8-3.

In the area’s final regular-season hockey game tonight, Jeffers visits Escanaba.

The dates for next week’s hockey regional have been changed. Instead of opening on Monday, the play-in game between Houghton and Hancock will be held on Tuesday. The semifinals have been pushed back from Wednesday to Thursday. The championship game will still be played Saturday at 2:00. Hear all the games from the SDC on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team plays at the American Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament this weekend. The top-seeded Lions face host Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, tomorrow night. Our broadcast will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com. If the Lions win, we’ll also broadcast the championship game on Sunday.

The Finlandia softball season begins this weekend, as the Lions host the Dome Tournament at the Superior Dome in Marquette. Finlandia will face Northland College tomorrow morning at 8:00, and Edgewood College tomorrow morning at 10:00. On Sunday, the Lions will take on Ripon College at 4:00, and Wisconsin-Superior at 6:00.

MTU/NMU
A late rally by the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team fall just short, and the Huskies lost to Wayne State University 71-69 last night. Tech trailed by seven with with just over a minute to go. They came back to tie the game, but the Warriors sank two late free throws to break the Huskies’ eight-game winning streak. Kelli Guy led MTU with 30 points.

The Tech men’s team staged a more successful rally, and edged Wayne State 81-78 in overtime. The Huskies overcame an eight-point deficit over the final six minutes, and forced the extra period when Isaac Appleby disrupted a Warriors’ layup at the buzzer. Bryan Heath sealed the win with two clutch free throws with three seconds remaining. Kyle Monroe led Tech with 29 points.

Both Huskies’ hoops teams conclude their regular seasons tomorrow at home against Davenport University. The start times for tomorrow’s games have been flipped – the men’s game will begin at 1:00, and the women’s contest at 3:00.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams defeated Davenport last night – the women 55-44, and the men 77-73.

The MTU hockey team wraps up its regular season with a home-and-home series against Northern Michigan University this weekend. Tonight’s game will be played in Marquette. Tomorrow’s contest begins at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Eagle River Falcons tonight.

The Calumet Wolverines are on the road against the West Bend Bombers tonight, and the Fond du Lac Bears tomorrow night.

NHL
Marco Scandella’s goal in the final second of overtime lifted the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings last night. Justin Abdelkader forced the extra period when he scored with 85 seconds remaining in regulation. Jonathan Ericsson also scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard stopped 27 shots in the loss. The Wings entertain the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow night. Because of Finlandia women’s basketball on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons return from the NBA All-Star break tonight, when they host the Boston Celtics. Tip-off will take place at 7:00 on 99.3 the Lift.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers defeated Florida Southern University 6-1 in their annual exhibition game yesterday. The Mocs kept the Tigers off the board for six innings. Detroit broke through with three in the seventh, and added three in the eighth. The Tigers open their Grapefruit League schedule against the New York Yankees this afternoon at 1:05. Listen for select preseason games and all of Detroit’s regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers begin their Cactus League schedule today, by splitting their squad for games against the Cubs and Giants.
