– Calumet suffered a 4-3 overtime loss at Escanaba. The Copper Kings fell behind early, but scored three power play goals in the third period to tie the contest. Tyler Loukus had two of those goals, and appeared to have scored the game-winner in the closing minutes, but referees waived it off. Levi Wunder’s power play goal just 24 seconds into the overtime won it for the Eskymos.

On Saturday…
– Hancock defeated Escanaba 4-2. Devyn LaCourt’s second-period goal broke a 2-2 tie. Zach Ahola and Larry Fallon scored earlier in the game, and Hunter Kero scored a shorthanded insurance goal with about five minutes remaining.
– The result of the L’Anse-Jeffers game was not reported.
– Calumet defeated Negaunee 3-1.

In girls’ high school basketball Friday night, Houghton fell to Marquette 49-40.

In boys’ play Friday night…
– Calumet shut down Chassell 60-28.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 53-30 win over Jeffers. The victory clinched the third straight Copper Country Conference title for the Lakes.
– Hancock defeated Ontonagon 62-54. The Bulldogs led by 14 at halftime, and survived a 24-point scoring outburst in the third quarter by the Gladiators to claim the win.
– Houghton lost at Escanaba 77-61.
– L’Anse dumped West Iron County 62-38.
– Dollar Bay lost to Republic-Michigamme 45-39

MTU Hoops Splits at LSSU
The eighth-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team rode a strong second half to a 72-61 victory over Lake Superior State on Saturday. The Huskies trailed by three at halftime, but surged ahead early in the second half when Kelli Guy connected on four quick three-pointers. Guy led all scorers with 20 points in the game. The Tech win, combined with a loss by Wayne State, clinches home court advantage throughout the upcoming GLIAC Tournament for the Huskies.

The Tech men’s team came back from an 11-point halftime deficit to take a brief second-half lead, but eventually dropped a 74-72 decision to the Lakers. Ben Stelzer led the Huskies with 22 points. The Lakers’ win, combined with a loss by Saginaw Valley State, gave Lake Superior State its second-straight GLIAC North title.

The Michigan Tech hockey team had the weekend off.

NMU Hockey Sweeps Bowling Green
NMU Athletics LogoRyan Kesti’s goal in overtime lifted the Northern Michigan University hockey team to a 3-2 victory at eighth-ranked Bowling Green Friday night. On Saturday, Reed Seckel tied the game with 12 minutes remaining, then scored the game-winner with a minute left, as the Wildcats completed the sweep with a 4-3 win.

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team shut down Northwood 65-44 on Saturday. The Wildcats’ men’s team lost to Northwood 81-66.

Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s hockey team wrapped up a winless season with a 6-1 loss to St. Norbert Friday night. Jena Kosley scored the Lions’ only goal. Finlandia finishes the season 0-21.

The Lions’ women’s basketball team raced out to a 23-point halftime lead, and cruised to a 58-29 victory over Mount Mary University Saturday. Marissa Burke led the Lions with 22 points. Finlandia closes its regular season with a record of 13-10. The Lions will play at the Great South Athletic Conference tournament at Agnes Scott College next weekend.

GLHL
In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Portage Lake Pioneers scored three goals in the third period, and defeated the West Bend Bombers 5-2 Friday night. Ted Pietila had two goals for the Pioneers. The result of the Pioneers’ game against the Mosinee Papermakers Saturday night was not reported.

The Calumet Wolverines edged Mosinee 3-2 Friday night. Jeff Erkkila scored the game-winner late in the third period. On Saturday, the Wolverines lost to West Bend 6-3.

NHL – Red Wings Edge Stars
The Detroit Red Wings scored four times in the third period to force overtime, then beat the Dallas Stars 7-6 Saturday night. Pavel Datsyuk’s goal with less than two minutes remaining tied the game. Niklas Kronwall scored the game-winner 36 seconds into the extra period. Jakub Kindl also scored twice for Detroit, in his first game since being recalled from Grand Rapids to fill in for the injured Kyle Quincy. The Red Wings skate at Anaheim Monday night. Face-off is at 10:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg had to leave last night’s game after being punched in the face by Jamie Benn of the Stars. Zetterberg will be evaluated today.

NBA – Pistons Face Wizards
The Detroit Pistons host the Wizards this afternoon. Tip-off is at 3:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
