In high school hockey Saturday…
– Calumet led most of the way, but Lee Pietila’s overtime goal earned Brighton a 5-4 victory.
– Hancock came from two goals down to defeat Novi 5-2.
Friday night…
– Reid Hamar’s third-period goal was the game-winner, as Hancock stopped Brighton 3-1.
– Calumet defeated Novi 3-1.
Tonight, Jeffers skates at L’Anse.
In girls high school basketball Saturday, Hancock fell to Marquette 48-34 in the championship game at the Marquette tournament. Maija Sebbas led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Hancock advanced to the title game with a 41-37 win over Ashland Friday night. Sebbas scored 29.
– Houghton stopped Lake Linden-Hubbell 52-32. Sloane Zenner scored 16 for the Gremlins.
– Jeffers lost to Ontonagon 56-47.
– Chassell edged Bessemer 35-34.
– Baraga shut down Watersmeet 53-25.
– L’Anse lost at Stephenson 48-29.
In Friday’s only boys game, L’Anse lost to Ishpeming 62-19.

MTU
At the Desert Hockey Classic in Arizona, Michigan Tech won the title with a shootout victory over Yale in the championship game yesterday. The game officially ended in a 1-1 tie after overtime. Alex Petan scored the only goal in the shootout to give Tech the title. Dylan Steman scored during regulation. Jamie Phillips stopped 24 shots, plus three in the shootout. The Huskies advanced to the title game with a 4-2 victory over Connecticut Friday night.
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team made a late run, but lost to seventh-ranked Ashland 69-63 Saturday. Morgan Anderson led Tech with 14 points.
The Tech men’s team was tied with the Eagles in the final minute, but wound up losing 73-67. Kyle Monroe scored 24 for the Huskies.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey lost at 18th-ranked Minnesota State 3-1 Saturday night. On Friday, the Wildcats upended the Mavericks 3-1.
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team got past Lake Erie 45-38 on Saturday. The men’s team dropped a 63-54 decision to the Storm.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team was swept by St. Scholastica, falling 6-2 yesterday and 7-0 Saturday night.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to Manhattanville College at the Bruiser Bowl in Adrian on Saturday. On Friday, the Lions lost to St. Olaf 4-1. Sierra Meiners scored in both games for Finlandia.
The Finlandia women’s basketball team couldn’t capitalize on an early lead, and lost 82-64 at Crown College on Saturday. Julia Daavettila scored 27 for the Lions, and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Finlandia men’s team overcame a 10-point deficit in the final four minutes, and pulled out an 84-82 victory at Crown College. Jordan LaPlant led the Lions with 22 points.
Both Finlandia basketball teams lost at Minnesota-Morris Friday night. The women dropped an 80-59 decision. The men fell 89-73.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Calumet Wolverines 5-4 Saturday evening. Jay Pietila scored the game-winner for Portage. On Friday, the Wolverines defeated the Marquette Iron Rangers 7-4. Josh Harju and Mike Babcock each scored twice for Calumet.
NHL
Riley Sheahan’s goal with less than four minutes remaining lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks last night. Petr Mrazek made 30 saves. The Wings have won four straight, and skate at Los Angeles tonight. Face-off is at 10:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit defenseman Jakub Kindl has cleared waivers, and will be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Kindl was removed from the roster to help make room for Kyle Quincey’s return from injury.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow evening. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NFL
In yesterday’s NFL Wild Card playoff games…
– The Seahawks scored all of their points in the fourth quarter, and edged the Vikings 10-9. Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh missed a 27-yard field goal in the closing seconds that would have won the game for the Vikings.
– The Packers got off to a slow start, but found their rhythm in the second quarter, and eliminated Washington 35-18. Green Bay will play at Arizona on Sunday. Hear all of next weekend’s playoff games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Detroit Lions have found their new general manager. Patriots director of pro scouting Bob Quinn has reached an agreement in principle to take the job. The futures of interim general manager Sheldon White and head coach Jim Caldwell remain unclear.
