Tech Volleyball Outlasts NMU – Sunday Sports Wrap

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team fell 3-0 to 22nd-ranked Concordia-Wisconsin yesterday. Former Houghton Gremlin Marcus Gloss made 38 saves in his first collegiate start.

The Lions women’s hockey team fell behind early, and lost to Trine University 5-1 yesterday. Sierra Meiners scored the only Lions goal late in the game. Annah Smiddy made 46 saves in net.

The top-seeded Finlandia volleyball team was upset 3-0 (25-23, 33-31, 25-13) by Alfred State University in the first round of the American Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament yesterday. Kaisa Holmstrom had nine kills for the Lions. Nicole Anderson had 24 assists, and Jesse Diaz recorded nine digs. The Piuoneers will face SUNY-Canton in the title game today.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker to SUNY-Canton in the opening round of the ACAA tournament yesterday. The teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and three overtime periods. The Kangaroos then outscored the Lions 4-2 in a shootout to advance to the championship match against Pine Manor College.

The Finlandia University football team closed its season with a 37-14 loss at Trinity Bible College yesterday afternoon. FinnU trailed just 18-14 at halftime, thanks to two De’Llontae Johnson-to-Bryce Beauchaine touchdown passes. However, Finlandia couldn’t overcome five turnovers, as Trinity scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half. Trinity’s Landon Bradley set a new school record by rushing for 213 yards.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team saw its winless streak swell to five straight games last night, with a 2-2 tie against Bowling Green. The Falcons earned the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings point by winning the shootout. Keegan Ford scored his first goal as a Husky to give Tech an early lead. After BGSU scored twice, Gavin Gould’s goal with five minutes remaining in regulation tied the contest. Devin Kero stopped 24 shots in goal.

The MTU football team lost 14-7 at Tiffin yesterday afternoon. A 22-yard scoring pass from Garrett Young to Ben Hartley gave the Huskies a 7-0 halftime lead, but the Dragons scored twice in the second half to claim the victory. Young completed 14 of 32 passes for 226 yards, but Tech was held to just 56 yards on the ground.

The Huskies volleyball team pulled out a dramatic 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 18-16) victory over Northern Michigan University yesterday. Mariah Sherman had 18 kills for Tech. Laura DeMarchi recorded 59 assists, and Elle Heinonen had 24 digs. The win guaranteed the Huskies at least a second-place finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team upended ninth-ranked Minnesota State 4-1 last night, to earn a split in their weekend series.

The Northern football team overcame an early 14-point deficit to take a late lead at Wayne State yesterday, but the Warriors kicked a fourth-quarter field goal, and then intercepted a pass to end a late NMU drive and hand the Wildcats a 26-24 loss.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will play at Edmonton this afternoon. Faceoff is at 4:00. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons got off to a quick start, and held off the Sacremento Kings 108-99 last night. Avery Bradley led Detroit with 24 points. Andre Drummond had 16 points, 19 rebounds. The Pistons host the Indiana Pacers Wednesday night.

NFL
The Detroit Lions visit the Green Bay Packers tomorrow night. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
