The Michigan Tech volleyball team took the first two sets at Northern Michigan University last night, but the Wildcats came back to win a very close match 3-2 (25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 12-15). Mariah Sherman led the Huskies with 15 kills.

Purdue University Northwest has been granted provisional Division Two status by the NCAA, and will begin competing in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next fall. Purdue Northwest maintains campuses in Hammond and Westville, Indiana… southeast of Chicago.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association will retire referee jersey number 12. That was the number worn by longtime official Oliver “Butch” Mousseau, who died from head injuries he suffered from a fall to the ice during warm-ups before a tournament semifinal game last spring.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers pounded the Cleveland Indians 12-0 last night. A day after clinching the American League Central Division title, the Indians rested several of their regulars. The Tigers took advantage. Justin Verlander pitched into the eighth inning, giving up just four hits, and striking out a dozen. Kyle Ryan completed the shutout. Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton and Andrew Romine homered.
The Tigers continue that home set against the Indians tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Zach McAllister. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Baltimore lost last night, so the Tigers now trail the Orioles by one game in the race for the final American League wild card playoff berth.
The Tigers have brought third baseman Nick Castellanos off the disabled list. He arrived during the middle of last night’s game, and clubbed a pinch-hit double in his first at-bat since early August.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell 6-4 to the Texas Rangers last night. Jimmy Nelson took the loss, giving up five runs before leaving in the sixth inning. Chris Carter hit his 39th home run.
That series concludes in Arlington tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Cole Hamels.
NHL
Mitch Callahan scored two goals, as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 in their first preseason game last night. The Wings will skate at Boston tonight.
Gun and Knife Show
The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club will hold its annual Gun and Knife Show this weekend at the Siskiwit Reception Hall in Calumet. The show will be open Friday from 4:00 until 9:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00. Vendors will display guns, knives, and other items of interest to outdoor enthusiasts. Refreshments will be available. Admission is $5.00; children ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Proceeds support the supplemental deer feeding program.
