Tech Volleyball Advances to GLIAC Final – Sunday Sports Wrap

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team raced past Great Lakes Christian College 74-42 Saturday. The Lions defense held the Crusaders to just 17 points in the first half. Katie Lundeen led Finlandia with 29 points. Cassie Ryynanen added 14 off the bench.

The Lions men’s team closed the Carthage Classic with a 110-98 overtime loss to Aurora University Saturday afternoon. River Shumate’s layup with two seconds remaining in regulation forced the extra period. The Spartans outscored the Lions 14-2 in the extra stanza. Shumate paced Finlandia with 22 points. Jacob Oom had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lawrence University men’s hockey team scored four goals in the third period, and defeated Finlandia 5-2 Saturday afternoon. Dylan Paavola and Connor Hannon scored for the Lions. Santeri Seppinen stopped 25 shots in net. 

The FinnU women’s hockey squad fell 6-1 to Saint Norbert College Saturday. Kait Ryynanen scored the Lions’ only goal. Abby Edstrom made 36 saves as the Green Knights outshot FinnU 42-12.

WCHA

The Michigan Tech hockey team earned a weekend sweep over Northern Michigan University, with a 3-2 victory Saturday night in Marquette. Goals by Raymond Brice, Alec Broetzman and Eric Gotz gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead after two periods. The Wildcats got one back early in the third, then narrowed the gap in the closing minutes after pulling their goalie.

GLIAC

The MTU volleyball team advanced to the finals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament by blanking Northern Michigan University 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) in the semifinal Saturday. The second-seeded Huskies will face top-seed Ferris State this afternoon at 4:00 for the title in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs won both of the regular-season meetings between the two teams this fall.

The Tech women’s basketball team will host Minnesota-Duluth today at 1:00.

The men’s basketball team lost 85-80 to Minnesota-Duluth Saturday. The Huskies battled back from a couple of double-digit deficits, led by Tommy Lucca, who scored 34 points.

Erin Honkala’s layup off a pass from a driving Amber Huebner with one second remaining lifted the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team to a 55-53 victory over Saint Cloud State yesterday. The Wildcats will host Concordia-Saint Paul today.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the New Jersey Devils 5-1 Saturday night. Taro Hirose gave the Wings an early lead, but that was all they could muster against New Jersey goaltender Louis Domingue, who was making his first NHL start. Detroit netminder Jonathan Bernier stopped 29 shots.

The Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons fell to the Milwaukee Bucks 104-90 Saturday night. Derrick Rose led Detroit with 20 points. Blake Griffin sat out, after scoring 24 the night before.

The Pistons host the Orlando Magic Monday night.

NFL

The Detroit Lions visit Washington this afternoon for a 1:00 game. The Green Bay Packers face the 49ers in San Francisco tonight. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.
