Calumet Copper Kings LogoIn high school hockey last night…
– Rory Anderson’s goal 55 seconds into overtime gave Calumet coach Jim Crawford a victory in his final home game, as the Copper Kings defeated Marquette 3-2. Ian Carroll made 23 saves to earn the win, which moved Calumet into second place in the Great Lakes Conference.
– Houghton shaded Hancock 1-0. Wyatt Liston scored the only goal of the game for the Gremlins.

The Lake Superior Conference Tournament opens tonight at MacInnes Arena, Jeffers faces Kingsford at 6:00. L’Anse takes on Negaunee at 8:00. The consolation game will be played tomorrow at 1:00, and the championship match at 3:00.

– Calumet clinched second place in the WestPAC with a narrow 40-38 victory over West Iron County.
– Baraga got 18 points from Austin Smith, and defeated Hancock 61-56.

– Hancock hosts West Iron County.
– Houghton plays at Westwood.
– Jeffers visits Ontonagon.

MTU Hoops Sweeps NMU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams closed their regular seasons with victories over Northern Michigan last night.

The women’s squad got 22 points from Jillian Richie en route to a 63-50 win. The Huskies took control with a dominant 10-minute stretch in the first half, in which they allowed the Wildcats only two points. Tech finishes the regular season with a record of 24-2, and controls home court advantage for the GLIAC playoffs. They will host Hillsdale in the opening round on Wednesday. Northern will open the playoffs at Grand Valley.

The men’s team also jumped out to an early lead, and cruised to a 71-52 victory. The Huskies’ defense held the Wildcats to just 19 points in the first half. Ben Stelzer led the effort with 20 points. The win earned Tech the number-two seed in the upcoming GLIAC tournament. They will host Walsh in the opening round on Wednesday.

The Northern Michigan hockey team hosts Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow night.

Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s basketball team is the top seed at the Great South Athletic Conference tournament this weekend. The tourney is being played at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. The host team faces Wesleyan College this afternoon. The winner of that game will take on Finlandia in the semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 4:00. Salem and Pine Manor will meet in the other semifinal tomorrow. The championship game will be played Sunday at 1:00.

The Finlandia softball team opens its schedule this weekend by hosting the annual Dome Tournament in Marquette. The Lions will face Edgewood College tomorrow morning at 8:00… Wisconsin-Superior tomorrow at 9:45… Carroll University tomorrow afternoon at 3:00… and Lake Superior State tomorrow at 4:45. On Sunday, the Lions will meet Marian University at 8:00… and Concordia-Wisconsin at 1:15.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines entertain the Fond du Lac Bears tonight. Game time is 7:30 at the Colosseum. The Wolverines will welcome Eagle River for games tomorrow night at 7:30, and Sunday afternoon at 1:00.

The Portage Lake Pioneers host Fond du Lac tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

Red Wings LogoNHL – Red Wings Edge San Jose
Luke Glendening’s late goal lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks last night. Detroit trailed 2-1 going into the third period, but Pavel Datsyuk’s backhander tied it, and Glendening won it with 1:15 to go. The Wings skate at Nashville tomorrow afternoon Face-off is at 3:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Host Knicks
The Detroit Pistons entertain the Knicks tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MLB – Smith Claimed by A’s
The Detroit Tigers have lost reliever Chad Smith. Smith was designated for assignment to make room for Joba Chamberlain on the roster. He was claimed off waivers by the Athletics.

CopperDog 150 LogoCopperDog 150 Opens Tonight
The CopperDog 150 dogsled race begins tonight in downtown Calumet. The opening ceremony will start at 6:30. The first team will leave the gate at 7:00. Mushers will travel from Calumet to Eagle Harbor tonight… then to Copper Harbor tomorrow… and back to Calumet on Sunday. The single stage CopperDog 40 will also take place tonight, with mushers traveling from Calumet to Eagle River. Listen for full coverage of the race this weekend on 97.7 The Wolf.
