Tech Sweeps Ferris, Claims MacInnes Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School Hockey

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Calumet blasted Negaunee 9-1. The game ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Dan Loukus had two goals and three assists. Carson Kariniemi and Jackson Rilei each scored twice, and the Copper Kings got single goals from Tom Erkkila, Nolan Sturos and Ayden Williams. Calumet outshot the Miners 41-8.
• Hancock mauled Jeffers 9-1. After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs exploded for six goals in the second, and the game ended during the third period because of the mercy rule.

In girls basketball Saturday…
• Houghton outscored Jeffers 85-60.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 54-49. Ashley Datto had 18 for the Blue Bolts.

In boys hoops Saturday…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 61-47. AJ Datto led Dollar Bay with 20 points.

In high school swimming Saturday…
• The results of Houghton’s triangular with Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie were not reported.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a sweep of the Winter Carnival series and claimed the John MacInnes Cup with a 5-1 victory over Ferris State University Saturday night. Alec Broetzman gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Colin Swoyer scored the eventual game-winner late in the second frame. After the Bulldogs got one back early in the third period, goals from Logan Ganie, Ryan Mosley and Trenton Bliss sealed the win.

The Huskies will host Lake Superior State University Tuesday, in the first of two make-up games for a series that was postponed earlier this season.

Ben Newhouse’s overtime goal lifted the Northern Michigan University hockey team to a 3-2 victory, and a series sweep over 17th-ranked Bemidji State University Saturday.

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team earned its first win of the season Saturday, with a 3-2 overtime victory at Concordia-Wisconsin. Phil Schader and Cale Markham scored in regulation for the Lions, and Blake Gutterman netted the game-winner just 29 seconds into the extra stanza. Marcus Gloss got the win in net, as the Lions were outshot 40-28.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball won its 10th straight game Saturday, completing a weekend sweep of Davenport University with an 83-61 victory. Ellie Mackay paced the Huskies with 20 points.

The Tech men’s team fell again at Davenport 77-70 Saturday. Owen White led MTU with 20 points.

The NMU men’s basketball team lost again at Grand Valley State 77-72 Saturday.

The Northern women fell to GVSU 61-34 Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats will host the Lakers again today.

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team dropped a 94-65 decision at Iowa Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. Dylan Underwood led the Lions with 19 points. Finlandia plays at Coe College today.

The Finlandia women’s team was off this weekend.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Nashville Predators 4-2 Saturday. Luke Glendening had a goal and two assists. Robbie Fabbri, Adam Erne and Anthony Mantha also scored. Jonathan Bernier made 21 saves.

The Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks Monday. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the New Orleans Pelicans this evening. Coverage starts at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Our high school basketball coverage continues Monday evening, as the Houghton girls play at Calumet. The pregame show begins around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
