Tech Soccer Blanks Purdue Northwest – Monday Sports Wrap

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader against Northland College yesterday, 11-2 and 6-2. Cassy Lopez and Melanie Torres each had four hits on the day.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team blanked Purdue Northwest 3-0 yesterday. Grace Shaw scored the eventual game-winner just nine minutes into the game, and Haley Ruiter, and Kiersen Korienek added insurance tallies. The Huskies dominated play, with 13 shots on goal, while Erika Gabriel had to make just two saves to earn the shutout in net.

Tech has one game remaining. The contest against Wisconsin-Parkside that was postponed last Friday will be made up this Friday at 1:00 at Sherman Field. The GLIAC tournament takes place next week.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Dallas Stars tonight. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight.

MLB

The Oakland Athletics scored two late runs, and edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 yesterday. Both of Detroit’s runs came in the sixth inning, when Harold Castro singled home Jeimer Candelario and Willi Castro. Starter Matthew Boyd gave up a run in the fourth inning, then left after the A’s tied the game in the eighth. Gregory Soto was on the mound in the ninth when Candelario misplayed Mitch Moreland’s ground ball at third base, and Matt Olson raced home from second base with the winning run.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Tyler Anderson. Coverage will begin at 6:20 on 99.3 The Lift.

Spencer Turnbull will make his first start of the season Wednesday. Turnbull missed much of spring training because of a COVID-19 diagnosis. He will take Tarik Skubal’s turn in the rotation, with Skubal anticipated to relieve Turnbull, whose pitch count will be limited.

Colin Moran’s double off J.P. Feyereisen in the top of the 10th inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday. Starter Freddy Peralta gave up three runs over five innings. Daniel Vogelbach blasted two home runs, and Avisaíl García hit one.

The Brewers head to the coast, and open a series against the San Diego Padres tonight. Brandon Woodruff will start against Joe Musgrove.
