High School Hockey
In high school hockey, the score from last night’s Jeffers match at Gaylord was not reported. The Jets open the Soo Elks Tournament against the host Blue Devils tonight at 8:00, and face Big Rapids tomorrow afternoon at 3:00.

In high school football tournament action for Upper Peninsula teams this weekend…
– In eight-man play, Cedarville will face Lawrence for the state title tonight at 7:00 at Greenville.
– In the Division Eight semifinals, Munising will meet perennial contender Beal City tonight at 7:00 at the Superior Dome.
– In Division Seven, Ishpeming will face Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary tomorrow at 2:00 at the Dome.
– In Division Five, Menominee will take on defending champion Grand Rapids West Catholic tomorrow at 11:00 at the Dome.
MTU Prepares for Big Sports Weekend
The Michigan Tech football team will host it first-ever NCAA tournament game tomorrow. Kickoff is at noon against Angelo State. The temperature is expected to be 36 degrees, and we might see a little sun during the game.
The unbeaten, number-one-in-the-nation Tech hockey team hosts Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night. Faceoffs are at 7:07 each night at MacInnes Arena.
The Tech women’s basketball team entertains Concordia-St. Paul this evening. The Golden Bears are nationally-ranked, and coach Kim Cameron’s team will need to shut down former Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year Anika Whiting. Tip-off is at 5:00 at the SDC.
The Tech men’s hoops team opens its season at Minnesota-Duluth tomorrow afternoon. The Huskies bring back 13 of last year’s 16 letterwinners, including GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year Ben Stelzer.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team plays at Alaska-Anchorage tonight and tomorrow night.
The Wildcats women’s basketball team hosts Concordia-St. Paul Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team skates at Wisconsin-Stout tonight, and Wisconsin-Superior tomorrow night. The women’s hockey team plays at Concordia-Wisconsin tomorrow night.
The Finlandia men’s basketball team plays at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh tournament this weekend. The Lions will open against Luther College in the first game this evening. The host team faces Blackburn College in the nightcap. Tonight’s winners and losers will meet tomorrow.
The Finlandia women’s basketball team plays at the University of Northwestern Tip-Off tournament in Saint Paul this weekend. The Lions will open against the host Eagles tonight.
NHL – Tatar Powers Red Wings
Tomas Tatar led the Red Wings to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Jets last night. Winnipeg opened a 2-0 lead, but Tatar scored Detroit’s first goal midway through the second period, and netted the game-winner with five minutes remaining. Petr Mrazek stopped 31 shots to earn his first win of the season in goal. The Wings will skate at Toronto tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Wings were not able to slip forward Andrej Nestrasil through waivers. He was claimed by the Panthers. Detroit had hoped to reassign Nestrasil to Grand Rapids, as they bring Stephen Weiss off the injured list.
NBA – Pistons Visit Hawks
The Detroit Pistons play at Atlanta tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NFL – Raiders Get First Win
In last night’s NFL game, the Raiders stunned the Chiefs 24-20, to earn their first victory of the season.
On Sunday, the Lions visit the Patriots. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. The Packers play at Minnesota – that’s also a 1:00 kickoff.
Because of the heavy snow in Buffalo, Monday night’s Bills game against the Jets has been moved to Ford Field in Detroit.
MLB – Tigers Claim Reliever
The Tigers have claimed reliever Josh Zeid off waivers from the Astros. Zeid had an effective rookie season two years ago. He struggled last season, before winding up on the disabled list and undergoing surgery on both feet. He is expected to be ready for spring training.
